Really was wondering about cable types/brands/etc... what is the best to use, and where to get. Probably around here somewhere, just haven't looked for it just yet. It looked like the ATX plug has a bunch of different wires. I guess I don't understand yet what types of wiring is needed, been so busy tonight, haven't had the chance to look.

Just go to the hardware store and ask for 18 gauge multi core wire.

Its not the best but has worked well for me.

Hrm, so the wire is all the same? I was under the impression that the type of wire was actually different. Why do they have all the colors and everything if the wires are all the same? Thanks for the link.

The wire is all 18 or 20 AWG. If you have a small PSU and a small load then you can go with 20. I stick to 18 for CPU, Mobo, GPU and HDD/ODD. I also use 24 gauge for Fans or LEDs since they don't pull as much amperage.

Colors correspond to the voltage that wire carries. (for the most part) It makes it easier to identify what cable is what. You can buy colored wire if it makes you feel any better and replace yellow with yellow etc.

Example:
Red is 5V
Black is Ground
Yellow is 12V

+1 Fuganator, thanks for this info.

ADD:
Going to order some 18 AWG wire. W=VA, and 18 AWG can handle 16 amps. At 120 volts, this gives 1920Watts. I think I'll be OK thumb.gif

If all the bottom wires are ground, why did they cross the wires like this? I can't understand how uncrossing these wires would mean anything different voltage wise, since they are just ground connections. I certainly don't want to sleeve the wires in a cross config like this, so can it hurt to uncross these, or am I missing something...

To my understanding, we're talking about two different things here. My question is dealing with an inexplicable ground wire cross (not double wired), while the post you linked is dealing with double wires. Then again I may be misunderstanding what you are trying to show me.

On a different note, I am crossing my fingers that there aren't many double wires, that looked god-awful. I was actually watching these vids earlier smile.gif

yah, i'm not sure. There seems to be reference to what your confronting in the double wire text/video. But that thread would be a good place, or the Seasonic thread - forgot about that one - to post a question/pic.

Wait a minute, aren't all black wires ground ? So following that ... I'd want to be sure, as you do, though.

ADD: I think part of the problem is that the connectors on the mobo side are keyed to the mobo connector, and so are the wires - they're specific to the connector that they ... connect to, or are inserted.

Or I may not be getting the problem at all. Its about moving 2 black - ground - wires "under" the yellow wires. Wouldn't the psu flip give you the needed stretch ?

2nd ADD: I just read up a bit on the RIVE board. Apparently, you do NOT have to connect to the 4pin, unless you have stability issues - re overclocking.

So you could run the pc without the 4pin, until you get a fix for the cable's shortness. I wonder if you're the first to post your build with a RIVE in an SM8 ... ?

So you could run the pc without the 4pin, until you get a fix for the cable's shortness. I wonder if you're the first to post your build with a RIVE in an SM8 ... ?

Yea I had heard that before somewhere, thanks for the link. I just wanted to have the option just in case. Thanks for all your help with this, I've been too busy to look into anything today.

Also, I side with that poor guy that got Admin'd to death in that thread. Poor behavior on Asus admin's part imo. I'm sure others will have different opinions. They really couldn't give that guy a straight answer. Surprised Asus keeps them around. /rant
