Anything special about MDPC-X screws?

as title asks...

Just wondering because I'm going to get an order from both MDPC-X and McMasterCarr.. and McMasterCarr stainless M3 screws are 3x cheaper than MDPC-X screws, and MMC stainless black-oxide M3 screws are 2.5x cheaper than MDPC-X....

Any different if I just buy some black-oxide MMC screws and finish it off with a light spray with spraypaint?

In my experience painting screws doesn't work out very well since the paint tends to scrape off when you use a screw driver. You might have some luck with thumbscrews or non-philips/non-flathead designs. I'm guessing that to be effective they would need to be anodized. Powder coating might work somewhat, but probably not nearly as well as anodized.

And before anyone asks, that's not a scratch on the bottom left one, it's a bit of lint from the tea towel.

I have used both, and the difference is noticeable. The black oxide from mcmaster has a matte finish while the stuff from mdpc is more on the glossy side of a satin finish. Also the finish is very consistent on the mdpc while the mcmaster may have some light spots.

As you have noted, a very light coating of a satin black spraypaint will do wonders to the mcmaster stuff. Just be very careful when assembling to avoid chipping it off. Although, even if you did scratch or chip it, you wouldn't notice as it will still be black underneath.

My 2c: if you are replacing the entire case worth of hardware, go with mcmaster/satin paint, but if just ordering a little bit, just order when you place your mdpc order.
