"Gradually getting better" Machine Build Log

Thread Starter
I guess I forgot to make a build log when I first got all the parts for this PC, but better late than never, right? Anyway, let's dive into the parts list:

Current Build

Processor: i7 2600k @ 4.4 GHz (1.320V)
CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 paired with Arctic Silver 5
RAM: 8 GB Kingston DDR3-1600 RAM
Motherboard: MSI Z68MA ED55 (B3)
Case: Rosewill Thor V2 (Black)
Storage: 2x 1 TB Seagate Barracuda (RAID 1)
Storage: Intel 520 Series 120 GB SSD
Graphics Card: ASUS Radeon 7850 2 GB
Disc Drive: ASUS OEM DVD Burner
Power Supply: Rosewill HIVE 750W
Monitor: 20" Dell Monitor
Monitor: 20" LG Monitor
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit

Planned Additions
Disc Drive: Lite On Light Scribe DVD Burner (Light Scribe is awesome, I'd love to try it out, and it's only $3 more than any other DVD burner)

Hopefully I can get some pictures up of this build later today, because it looks alright, but nothing special, no case mods or blinding LED's. wink.gif

So far this build has cost me somewhere around $1400, and I want to make it the kind of computer that I can upgrade and add new parts whenever I like, and from the old parts, build another computer. In the end, the other computer will probably be the same computer as I originally had LOL, but whatever. wink.gif

Temperatures:

CPU Idle: 28C
CPU Prime95 Test: 65C @ 4.4 GHz

GPU Idle: 36C
GPU Full Load: 65C

Pictures: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
4.4 GHz Proof & Temperatures:

Internal View of all Components:

Hyper 212 - Look at that GPU and RAM clearance!

Another view of the components:

This fan blows air through the case. It's 120mm. That is all.

"Double rainbow monitors all the way across the desk!"

SSD Read/Write Testing, hitting over it's top speeds of 550/500!

Uses

I mainly use this PC for gaming, making videos, surfing the net, and everyday stuff. I enjoy having a higher end system, because I'm a geek who looks at the long run: If an SSD boots Windows quicker by 10 seconds than a HDD, that (for me at least) , that saves me an hour of time every year from booting. biggrin.gif (I boot my PC around once a day, not everyday though) I also really enjoy working with PC hardware, and drool over all the new hardware that is released all the time. smile.gif

Goals
-Achieve a 4 GHz OC on the 2600k, without going above 65C under load (Done!)
-Successfully configure a RAID Array (Done!) (RAID 1 - 2x Seagate Barracudas)
-Have a successful setup with 2 DVD drives (I do legal DVD copying, so if I can copy + burn at the same time, it saves quite a bit of time)
-Learn how to properly use two monitors (I know how to use them, but I'll probably learn with time, on how to use them more efficiently) (Done!)

Don't get Arctic silver. That thermal paste is old and there are MUCH better alternatives.
IC diamond is awesome. I tested it on 3 machines versus Arctic silver and my temps dropped across the board. It lowered idle temps 3C and load temps 7C. Also, the break in time is A LOT less than AS5. AS5 requires 200 hours to break in whereas IC Diamond only takes ~8 hours.

I'm interested in looking into this. Can you link me to it on Newegg or something like that? I searched Newegg, but couldn't find it.

PK-1 is the best thermal paste at the moment. Look into that.

Newegg Canada does have PK-1 though, but it's out of stock. :/

Order from Sidewinder Computers. They ship to Canada. I live in Toronto and that's where I get all my stuff. Just choose First Class International as the shipping method in checkout.

Here's an update on the build all: I went to my local computer parts store today and picked up the following for my build:

-LG 20" Monitor
-HDMI Cable & Adapter to DVI
-Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler
-Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Grease

I know you're probably face palming about the Arctic Silver, but the store had an awesome sale on it, and I just couldn't pass it up.

I've installed the monitor, and with them paired on an extended desktop, I can zip between screens easily. smile.gif

I love it so far, and my mission for tomorrow: Install my CPU cooler, and apply thermal grease, begin doing load tests to burn in the grease.

My mission for this week: Begin to OC the processor, and do plenty of tests to assure stability to the system.

Well, I have a successful 4.4 Ghz overclock on this machine! It's stable for 9 hours doing "The Prime Test" at 1.315 volts. smile.gif Just to be safe though, I've upped the voltage to 1.32V. smile.gif

Pictures soon!

I'm loving this 4.4 GHz overclock, my PC seems much faster logging on/off, and doing general tasks. smile.gif
