Recommendations: Best HD 7950 Under $320

Thread Starter
Looking for a HD 7950 for under $320 to replace my aged HIS 4870 1GB, the oldest part in my new rig.

I have seen some threads that state some of the 7950s are using the 7970 PCBs, so wouldn't mind getting one of those as long as it stays under $320.

Thanks!

See rig specs in Sig

Also prefer black or red PCB....

May go with another color if needed..

Trying to keep it uniform in my rig

(still working on the wiring)

i think the sapphire dual x and th msi twin frozer 3 use 7970pcb, both look good, i like the msi more, but thats me

quote from website
"For more robust overclockers look for:
1) Sapphire Dual-X 950mhz version (6+8 power / 7970 PCB)
2) Sapphire Vapor-X (8 black diamond chockes and vapor chamber cooler)
3) Gigabyte Windforce 3x
4) MSI TF3 (newer ones will have 6+8 power / 7970 PCB)"

i just bought the gigabyte 7950 and the cooler is great , from what ive read its the best cooler on 7950s. i easily clocked it to 1100 1575 and temps max out at around 60c . i would go with the gigabyte or the sapphire ones . i read the msi twin frozr had problems with tim or something

This is on sale and it ends tomorrow, but it is a VERY good card.

If it were within your budget though I would either go with the asus or gigabyte card. You might want to do a bit of searching around for the asus card to see if you can't find a deal you like because that direct cuII cooler is by far the best cooler I have ever dealt with. It is silent even at 100% and it keeps the card a lot cooler than one would think which means that you can basically run the fans at 100%, keep the card nice and cool, and overclock it to the ends of the earth.

thanks for the heads up on the possible tim problem on msi, im getting one soon, although i probably would have opened it up and put some artic silver 5 anyways, the gigabyte was a no go for me because of the blue pcb, (yes im that anal) and the sapphire for the same reason. im even urged to get the 7970 lightning because of the backplate, i may be able to stand the blue leds on that reactor thing

The new ASUS HD 7950 DCUII card could be a good buy (the V2 version)
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show) in the V2 they improved the cooler (since V1 had the overheating problems on some batches / all) and the construction (better fitted cooler with less sagginess) and the PCB is shortened. (not sure if its a stock 7950 pcb shortened or a custom one)

if you can find either for a cheap price and / or don't mind the 3 slot cooler it is a recommended buy.

if not, then first look for a 7950 with a 7970 pcb (usually with 8+6 rather than the 6+6 of the stock 7950). if bot, search for great after market coolers cards. and if its possible, factory OC isn't too bad of a thing since the card is better binned.

but the best thing is if you are able to find a 7970 for a low price go for it, it could be the best buy of this generation. ( /exaggeration )

Hope i helped biggrin.gif

i wouldn't recommend this card over others for a few main reasons:

1. the OP asked for non blue pcb.

2. it is not a 7970 pcb, but a custom one. (important if OP plans to go WC or replace the cooling)
(as seen in EK's Cooling configurator: proof (Click to show)
7950 Vapor-X:

7950 pcb:
ASUS-HD7950-DC2%28T%29-PCB.jpg

7970 pcb:
AMD-Radeon-7970-3GB-PCB.jpg
)

3. There are (way) too many threads on OCN about these cards being voltage locked.

Just gonna grab this one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202006&name=Desktop-Graphics-Cards

for $289.99 - $9.90 i have on a gift card - 1% cash back - $20 rebate = $257.29 + $170 in games. i can skip unlocked voltage and Black/Dark Brown 7970 PCB. biggrin.gif

Savings trumps those this time around.
