[Yahoo/AP] Early look at Windows 8 baffles consumers - Page 11

Tablets are certainly going to have a large marketshare, but are they going to completely push out desktops and laptops? Definitely not. They will still sell in significant numbers, hence why I think MS would have been better served to make a Metro inspired start menu and then full Metro for RT.

whatever ms did in the past is in the past, why?because china is going linux with loongsong ,i bet when their lisnux distro is launched 100 and 100 of million will go to it!so it will become officially number one as soon as china has released their distro!this means ms will be the main one loosing customer in china!and probably android and apple on the mobile space!

Haha, the comments in this thread were an entertaining read. Windows 8 utilises your hardware better, and is terrifically easy to use. In many ways I find it more productive than Windows 7.

Yes but you forget that the ENTIRE body of the OS is installed in mobile devices, which is unfair to consumers and goes along with their usual scheme of challenging your hardware to a ridiculous degree.

Its just my 2cents.gif but they should have allowed at setup which UI you want to use. Its clearly intended for touch screens and when I used it on my machine, I felt like it was awkward to use. Like the OS had an identity crisis. I really think this is a good tablet solution but for my desktop dont take away the desktop.

I want to love it for the small performance boost and may purchase it at the $40 upgrade in case it gets good mod support, but in reality it seems like MS is keeping up with their pattern of "every other OS is good"

I honestly can't help but chuckle when I see people complain that Windows 8 has only been optimized for touch, or that the interface has been dumbed down. Especially when it comes from "enthusiasts" on places like OCN where people are supposedly smarter than the average Joe when it comes to computers.

I have come to the conclusion when people make these claims, the person making the claim will fit snugly into one of the following two categories the vast majority of the time:

1. They have never used Windows 8 (and may occasionally lie about this), or...

2. They had already made up their mind before using Windows 8

This has become blatantly apparent after using Windows 8 exclusively for quite some time now. Why? First, before I address the new Start Screen, I will address the "inferior" desktop environment.

Improvements to the desktop environment:

Right click in the lower left corner of the screen to access the new and extremely useful power menu:

Task Manager:

Windows Explorer ribbon advanced settings previously buried away in Folder and Search options:

Enhanced file transfer:

There's a ton more enchantments to the desktop environment I am forgetting as well.

Now, the start menu...

Using the Start Screen, you can access and open programs FASTER than with the old start menu. Why? Because to open a program you've pinned to the start menu, you need to pinpoint your mouse over the icon in the start menu after having hit the windows key, or having pressed the start button with your mouse. Not a HUGE problem, I admit. Still, there is room for improvement. If you put that same program icon on the Windows 8 start screen, it is a larger and more centrally located tile. All you do is hit the windows button without moving your mouse at all, and then your mouse pointer is likely already at a closer proximity to the program tile than it would have been to the start menu icon.

Just so everyone knows, I'm not saying it's bad. Overall I think it's an improvement. It's just that the way it has been handled is clearly an attempt at herding many sheep in a direction that they are unaware they are going. Simplified and watered down = room for deception. That's my problem with it.

Don't they already do that file transfer thing in Linux for quite a while now? That is not very new since there were already third party utilities that did that in Windows.

Desktop marketshare might not disappear, but new sales of desktops (the metric that really matters) have slowed down while laptops, tablets, and phones are going up.
