[Yahoo/AP] Early look at Windows 8 baffles consumers - Page 14

I would rather have had MS copy the Gnome-shell or KDE netbook UI than to use their "metro" style. Both of those offer a mediocre medium between touch and mouse. Metro offers the worse of two worlds.

I guess we will see the true backlash after the winter buying season finishes? Or maybe all the new laptops/desktops aren't being sold with it yet.

Stardock seriously just won the game though (start8), which is good, they are a great company. thumb.gif

Stardock is a mediocre software development company, some of the worst code I have ever seen come out of a company.

Thanks for your opinion.

OEMs tried to ship Netbooks with that horrible Ubuntu Linux distro several years back...It was supposed to mark the end of WIndows' rein on the desktop.

I will have to try it again...I haven't done it since the earlier betas.
Who uses the mouse in combination with the windows key...it is windows key + type three letters or so + arrow key down if needed and/or just press enter.

What was "killed" was the legacy code for the start menu from the betas. The early betas had the legacy code, since Windows 8 is modified Windows 7. The legacy code could be reactivated through a registry hack. Later on in the betas, the legacy code was removed. That's it, there was no actual blocking of third party UI customization software.

I don't know about you, but if I'm using the mouse, I always have one hand on the mouse and the other on the keyboard. It's not a huge stretch of imagination to hit the windows key with one hand while moving the mouse to the tile with the other.

Don't mistake. I don't think that either of those UI's are particularly good; I just think they offer better consistency than metro while working with both touch and mouse (not to mention that the entire gnome-shell UI can be explained to someone in a matter of a few seconds and can easily be deduced by ordinary users (practical experience here) though I think it lacks the power of Gnome 2 or KDE plasma). I'm not suggesting that OEM's should definitely switch to Linux, I'm merely commenting that MS using a similar UI paradigm (though obviously with MS's own code) would have been better than metro. I would rather have a different UI for my laptop and tablet (and I enjoy the fact that KDE keeps Plasma desktop and Plasma Active separate). My only suggestion here is for you to try Gnome-shell in a virtual machine (or real install) and investigate the UI. I'm quite sure that you would find it more consistent than metro and you would also immediately see both that it seems designed with touch in mind and that OSX Mission Control ripped off the virtual desktops (for the record, Mission control instead of spaces has been the one thing tying my macbook to Snow Leopard).

Discussion of UI and discussion of Linux vs MS are completely separate topics. For example, there's ongoing work to improve the version of KDE for Windows (We're talking about the KDE UI on the NT kernel). That said, I didn't like the UI nor the distro that netbook manufacturers tried to push (and pushing Linux as though it were "free windows" isn't an acceptable strategy). I forsee (and cringe at) the potential for Android to replace Windows on desktops more than I see some other distro taking over.

Yea. Never gonna happen. Why? Microsoft is against free software, and will avoid disclosing their use of it (though they'll probably still copy it) at all costs.
