Damn video game companies, only using Windows.

Moar Wine.

It's highly likely that it'll work perfectly fine. If it doesn't run out of the box, winetricks can help.

Remember to disable desktop effects when running on KDE or Gnome.

That sounds like a lot of work just to get a game running to the same levels as it does in windows.

WINE isn't always the answer, keep in mind there are tons of games that don't work with WINE. Because WINE itself isn't friendly to every game engine used.

The answer is no, WINE is a emulation layer for capturing and converting DirectX API calls into OpenGL. You should always expect a performance impact when using WINE. A second thing to consider about this performance impact is linux drivers aren't as mature as Windows. So you cant expect the same level of performance from your hardware when using them. Tho with hardware being as powerful as it is today this little bit of performance hit is hardly noticeable to a game you get 100 FPS+ on Windows. Most games you play on Windows at above 40FPS should be playable with WINE. As long as the game is supported, you can check the WINE database on the official website. To see if what games you play have been tested with WINE, and how well they perform (Platinum, Gold, Silver).

Wine isn't a real solution. It's just a band aid and slapping it on anything bigger than a pin prick is just a wasted effort.

Most of the games will work perfectly without any issues. Of course that if it's rated "Garbage" at the appdb you shouldn't even try it.

http://appdb.winehq.org/

These are some of the games that I've been playing in the past month without a single issue:

Dishonored
Dota 2
Half Life 2
Torchlight 2 (disable shadows, they look blocky)
Call of Duty 4
Black Mesa

And clicking an option that says "Suspend desktop effects for fullscreen windows" isn't a lot of work.

Moar Wine.

Yes, Wine works.

Not on every game or perfectly for everything.

Does Wine work at 100% of the performance of Windows?

Some games it performs better than Windows, some equal and some worse.

Not really, if it supports everything you do then it supports everything you do.

If MS doesn't drop Metro and most of my games work in Wine for the most part, then I'll move permanently to Linux and just run everything that doesn't run perfectly using IOMMU and the like.

I was looking at the massive page on troubleshooting poor wine performance.

But it's still emulation, and with emulation there are usually some performance or other issues.
