New CPU needed for GAMING - Page 6

If this was a new build thread then sure, I would suggest the 1155/2011 socket but for him there isnt a need for it since he already has his own system running, this is merely an upgrade for him

H55 motherboards do not have robust mosfets and VRM's. H55 boards were designed to run very low power 32nm dual-core i3's and dual-core i5's. The core i7 860 is 45nm quad-core with hyperthreading. It will draw a lot more power than a dual-core i3/i5. i7-860 overclocking on a H55 board will be very limited.

My advice is either keep the i5-650 and overclock it to 4GHz+ or buy a newer motherboard and newer cpu.

By the way, hyperthreading has been proven to cause stuttering in some games in some conditions. I know because I have experienced stuttering with my core i3 during Heaven benchmark at low resolution. I would not spend extra money for a gaming cpu with hyperthreading.

at the end of the day, you don't really need a new cpu. the one you have performes great in games. all you need to do is oc to 4ghz+ get a good cpu cooler and save up for a better upgrade.

p.s with the savings you could get a nice 120 gb ssd") you will see nice boost in performence

well if he wants to sli down the road he'll have to pick up a board for that anyways.

Work on getting some rep OP, then you can resale your parts here and cover some of your cost

Sorry for not replying in a while. I've been busy with school.
I don't plan to overclock the CPU and if I had the money I would already be using a 2500K or above. But I'm dirt poor and in high school D:

If HT causes stuttering in some games then wouldn't having the 860 with HT off be better? I'm using my current i5 with HT on. I already ordered an i7 860 from Ebay (accidentally...too embarrassing to tell xD)
I must admit though, I'm no where close to you guys when it comes to this stuff. Thanks for all the suggestions though...but the power draw thing, will that severely affect my PC with my current PSU? I literally just bought it because my 480 was causing random reboots/freezing with my old power supply, which was from 2006-ish.

Also if I knew how to overclock the 650 I would..but you know..I haven't even invested in an aftermarket cooler yet cuz I've been trying to "upgrade" my PC with tech from 2-3 years ago.
Hopefully that will all change once I get a job. Then I'll be asking you guys which of the latest Intel processors I should get. I can't wait for those days tongue.gif

I've updated the BIOS for this motherboard so there's no worries for that =)
If I do get stuttering in games because of HT, can't I just make the game run on the actual cores and ignore the fake ones with Process Lasso? Or would I have to turn HT off completely?

You know the feels too huh?
I've gotten inbox messages on people..mostly teens around my age asking for upgrade suggestions.
just recently some guy wanted to upgrade his GPU for $100-$200.

At least I know I'm not alone xD But don't you ever wonder how people can afford like the top of the line Intel and Nvidia stuff? Even having 2 670s in SLI. And I can barely afford a 2500K.
I really need to find a job.

Same here dude. I still have the 6770 and game at a resolution of 1366x768(max resolution of my monitor). Atleast you have the gtx 480 wink.gif

I'm glad I chose it over the 570. The 1.5 vram comes in handy for my resolution.
But your video card is close to the GTX 460 right? I still think that's good.
