Tablet buyers are much more savvy today then they were when the first IPad was released. My 67 year old father actually knew the differences between two tablets we were discussing (I was somewhat amazed and shocked).

It is a shame your father's knowledge on current and future products (and their differences) isn't really indicative of the general public's knowledge level. Certainly if it was Apple wouldn't have won that sham of a trial earlier this year!

Either way, I am looking forward to the iPad mini. As someone who was locked into (by choice) the Apple Ecosystem for a good 4+ years but has now moved onto Android OS for my cellular phone, I am excited about a reasonably priced tablet to use the (quite literally) hundreds of dollars of apps and games that I had purchased on IOS but lost access to when switching to Android!

I tried the Nexus 7 and couldn't stand it, all three of the units I purchased had issues with multi-touch recognition. mad.gif

Unlike when the first IPad was released, Apple is waaay late to the smaller form factor tablet game. There are any number of excellent devices already on the market. Unless someone is in love with IOS and enjoys being tied to ITunes for every little activity, it may be a bit of a challenging sell.
Where Apple could steal market share was if there hardware specs blew all other comparable tablets away. If the laundry list in this thread is accurate, I'd say they have not accomplished that.

That is true for tech savy people like us on ocn. However in the eyes of the average joe, the only thing that matters is this is an apple product, and this is cheaper than the regular iPad. Now people who were on the fence all these years saying "no it is just a tad bit too expensive for me" have a chance at owning something Apple. Usually when people buy apple, they won't stop...its how they get you.

We like to hate on apple on OCN but look at their operation from a realistic point of view. Apple customers, well the typical ones have some sort of career. Forking over anything less than 200~ for repairs on some prized gadget should be no problem. With Android, you'd have to RMA to the manufacturer which WILL take time, apple is simply allowing those with the means to get things done fast. I can really appreciate that honestly. I've been watching their stock since it was around 250~, really excited to see how far the iPad mini will push it up.

I've been waiting for apple to release this for so long, not that I will be purchasing one. I'm just interested in seeing how well this will sell. On paper, it should fly off the shelves.

I actually don't hate Apple products. My house is full of them.. 2 Macbook Pro's, 2 IPhone 5's, 2 IPod Nano's (My wife and daughter's gear) and I have an IPad 2 64GB. I just wonder how they are going to market the mini as better than what is already on the market.

There is no Nexus 7 32GB, it's 8GB for $199 or 16GB for $249:
https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=nexus_7_16gb

I am not complaining but just correcting your mistake. The Nexus 7 has great hardware for the price. The 7" tablet race seems very hot with the Nexus 7, Nook HD, Fire HD, iPad Mini, and likely some 7" Window 8 RT tablets. Personally I love options and competition. The Nexus 7 will be hard to beat but with varying OSs, specs, and features each will have their pros and cons.

Edit: I wasn't aware the 32GB Nexus 7 is possibly coming the end of the month. This should be interesting. So I guess we were both kind of correct.biggrin.gif

We can compare specs and list better alternatives all day. We can bring up 100 reasons why the iPad mini is nothing special. However, apple marketers will blow this product up sky high and praise it for doing things better...."the is the iPad you've always been waiting for"...(they could say this everytime for every iteration and people will just scoop ut right it)
ughhhh this reminds me of all the political commercials they're having on tv for the presidential election. Vague sensationalist "facts"

The iPhone 4 and 4S cost under 100 bucks to produce. They used to sell all the time at their full retail price, more then 5 times the production cost. Apple knows people will eat their stuff up at outrageous prices. And they will continue to sell at the highest possible price they can, because people will buy it just as long as it has an Apple logo on it.

Why I will buy an iPad mini over any android tablet:

It seems the IN thing to always bash apple and insult anyone who buys there products as sheep.

I teach a class at the local community college 2 nights a week in addition to working full time during the day. When I needed useful tools to build my curriculum iWork filled the bill nicely. It's really easy to make nice looking worksheets and keep grades and etc. for a layman like myself.

I am not stupid or a sheep.

When I want a useful device to present my keynotes and pdf's on a projector, an iPad, fits the bill because I have no need for a full fledged computer in my shop. I teach apprentices how to install troubleshoot and repair HVAC controls. And a small device that I can carry around my shop is perfect.

In the public schools, my day job, an iPad mini would be a home run for strapped budgets and being able to put the tech in the hands of the kids even younger than with a full size iPad.

And the software available for iPad blows Android out of the water and really, you all know that too.

It basically is on here. Apple isn't the worst company in the world. I hate them too for patent trolling but they have some decent products. The only reason I consider them is for their LOD but Android is starting to get Audio over USB so I'll probably end up sooner or later with an Android device that supports Audio over USB. smile.gif

Look, I don't hate because it's the in thing. I hate for many things.

First: non-removable batteries.
Second: no microSD.
Third: Patent trolling.
Fourth: 75% profit margin.

I admit an sd card slot would be nice, but it doesn't really matter to most people.

Removable battery? Patents? Profit? not relevant to most buyers.
