Internet stabiiity test?

Thread Starter
Is there any free internet stability tests out there?

I'm getting occasional disconnects with my internet that last approximately one to two seconds long. The internet will dropout and then quickly re-connect. This occurs about twice every hour. This is with a wired cable internet connection. Ping is fine and no packet-loss. Very annoying problem especially when playing games.

I need a test that I can run overnight to rule out hardware possibilities even though chances are it's something wrong with ISP.

Thanks!

It's the standard Motorola surfboard modem that Time Warner rents out. Motorola SB5 series. Modem was replaced already, so it's likely not modem.

I am going to look up the procedure for checking your signal strength and error rates.

I'm not the guy that drops in and says "your modem sucks".

Hopefully I will come to a conclusion that you can share with the cable tech that comes to fix my findings.

Cool thanks. It's the Motorola SB5101. I'd imagine the problem is hard to isolate though because it's intermittent.

You will be able to access the cable modems settings information via 192.168.100.1

This means you will have to set your local systems IP address to something on the same subnet, ex: 192.168.100.2 in order to exchange packets with the devices management interface.

The modem has certain tolerances for signal strength and noise. It can be used as a great troubleshooting tool wince you don't have a CATV meter. Some modems even log things like errors, past errors, and failed sync's.

I haven't worked with a 5101 in a decent enough time ( if at all ) to remember, Screenshots will help ALOT.

OK, your forward ( into the modem level ) is a little low, Noise levels are also very good, minimal amounts of noise on your line.

The log looks like you have been fumbling with it ( resets to make it reconnect )

If You know how many splitters you are going through and how many ports they have, we can try to calculate what should be coming from your cable drop to the premises. If possible try to give me a map/description coming from the security box.
ex:emptyLol__[4way]--{cable boxes
[]2-way --|_______
whitestuffeverywhere{cable modem

Do you have access to your security box outside of your place?

Things to check in the security box.... just take a picture lol. Since going digital, some of the smallest problems can cause crazy issues.

If you have digital cable, with the box turned off hit HELP under Tuner 1 you will see a reading in dbmv. Report that as well.

Edit: Its a bit late for me, just update the thread whenever. I will come back to it, I am subbed.

Yeah it's too dark out for me to take a picture. I might do it later.

I found a few programs that might suit my needs, gonna test them out.

JD's Auto Speed Tester
http://www.gmwsoftware.co.uk/

3D Traceroute
http://www.d3tr.de/index.html

NetStat Live
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/Network/nsl/Freeware.htm

edit: Just tested them. None of them really do what I need them to do.

Those will only let you know you have a problem.

I have a general Idea of how it should be set up, and the things that will go wrong to cause your intermittent signal.

Just try to get me that picture whenever.

I want to try and get you fixed up.

I also have a question regarding your bandwidth package. are you supposed to receive more than 30~mbps down?
