Custom length PSU cables.

I know it's possible to cut the power supply cables to a specific length dependent on what you need in your specific build.
The big question is how would i go about doing this?
I know being grounded would be a big thing. And possibly being able to completely drain the PSU.
Is there any guides out there for this?
could anyone explain it to me in enough detail that i would be able to do it?

I would unplug the PSU, then turn it on a couple of times. Then wear rubber boots.

but would i have to use the same number of plugs on the cables?
for example on the cable there is 5 molex plugs, would i have to make sure i put all 5 back on?
or could i use my own custom number?
and does the spacing of the plugs matter?
