LG DVD-ROM not reading disc

Hi guys! smile.gif
My dvd-rom is perfectly detecting in my windows 7 ultimate, driver are up to date, cd tray works fine. But whenever I insert a disc, this piece of junk doesn't detect it. Shows please insert a disc bla bla.....I mean I just inserted a disc! mad.gif

Honestly, I have used it occasionally but it was working just fine and now this! redface.gif
Is it end of life of this hardware? Whats your insight on this??

It means the drive itself isn't detecting the disk you put in. It's quite a common problem with drives when they go faulty, it tries to read the disk (you'll see the LED blink as it tries), fails, and assumes the drives empty. You could try cleaning the laser if you're keen, but otherwise, it's time for a new drive.

The system will only show a disk in the drive, if the drive itself has detected the disk, and signals to the system it has a disk loaded.

Oh! Looks like I'll need to spare some money for DVD-ROM. Hmmm. Would it be worth to give a shot to laser cleaner disc? And what kind of cleaning disc are there? I mean I know there are these discs, never used one, how could a disc will clean a laser?

The cleaning discs arent really up to much to be honest...I've rescued some drives by popping the lid off, and cleaning the laser eye gently with a cotton bud soaked in some isopropyl alcohol. This has had a 50% success at best. Another thing you can do is give it a blast with air duster. The aim is to clear dust from the laser and mirrors under the "eye", you dont aim directly at the eye, but around it, and under where the laser diodes and sensors are. Some drives are a pain to open though, and you can get part falling out of place, which you have to suss out where they go and how they sit. Springs are sometimes involved too, so it can be tricky put back together! Its not impossible though, and if you have an analytical mind, you'll manage just fine. I cannot guarantee it will fix it though, its just things to try before getting a new drive.

Edit: oh! and forgot to say, the cleaning discs usually have a small "brush" on them you wet with isopropyl and then run the disc in the drive, the idea being the brush will clean the lens as it passes over it. :-)

Hey thanks for the details. smile.gif Could you recommend some lens cleaner? I never bought one so don't know what to look for & where? DVD-ROM looks pretty solid dunno how dust found way inside. I'm really surprised few days back it was working & it's dead. I think I should give a try to lens cleaner before buying new one. tongue.gif

In case I'm unlucky. redface.gif How about this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204&name=CD-DVD-Burners

I can't recommend a lens cleaner i'm afraid, i've never used one - i'm always too ready with a screwdriver to just strip things down, and clean with a cotton bud and isopropyl. biggrin.gif It would probably cost you about $10 for a cleaning kit anyway, half the price of a new drive. That ASUS one you linked to looks ok, it's dual layer capable, and not bad speeds. Seems alright for $20 I'd say, we'd pay £20 over here in the UK.

There was a couple of others I spotted on newegg if you wan't to save a couple of dollars :-

The LG has a slightly larger cache, and both of them seem dual-layer capable too. I have no idea which brand would be better quality though, So maybe other members of OCN with better knowledge of DVD drives could come in here and advise. :-)

If cleaner is half the price of new drive better I clean it your way, just need a screw driver! smile.gif I'm also have enthusiastic in stripping down things, but lately busy with job so was being little LAZY tongue.gif. Ok I'll give it a shot, if no results then it's time to say good bye to my LG GH22NS50. I wonder my DVD-ROM is aged just above 1 year and it went dead, I'm not sure if I should go with LG again! rolleyes.gif
