Setting up a web server?

Thread Starter
I am looking to setup a web server for a very large range of websites. Is it possible? How much does it cost? Is it easy?
Can I set one up at home?

Hosting a simple webpage would't be hard. Even if you know nothing you could find you way with XAMPP or even just apache on a linux server.

If however you want to host dynamic self created content or even a wordpress page and you have little to no knowldge of Mysql, apache or PHP then it would be simpler and easier/more secure to just use a hosting service.

I have the knowledge to create and maintain my own websites, but even i prefer a hosting service.

When i had webtechnology at school i used wampserver to test my website. You can install it just on a normal windows PC to try some stuff out.

If you want advice about hosting a website and about building a home server then it is probably better to make a thread here.

Unless your upstream bandwidth is amazing, don't bother setting one up at home.

WAMP, LAMP, etc are not for production use. Or actually, not recommended for production use smile.gif

I will second that you should never set up the server at home for production sites. Your clients will not be happy if you loose power, your internet goes down etc. Data centers have redundant servers for all that and even though you can still get downtime, it is much more rare for those types of reasons.

I actually have clients for whom we build large Enterprise software's, so basically need to get our own server to ensure the data cannot be seen by the host provider and even the algorithms and code need to be safe from the host.

I actually want to know how to setup a server, I probably don't need much of bandwidth, I can try my best for the uptime, but most important is whether it is possible to setup a server at home. As I heard it may require expensive softwares like firewalls to protect against theft.

You can setup a web server at home, but depending on your outbound bandwidth you might not be able to "serve" the content you want. Additionally, that you have to ask "Can i create a web server at home" suggests that you don't have the skills (yet) to host/create a webserver. Asking "how to make a web server" isn't an easy question to answer because the required knowledge isn't just a few simple steps, but rather a combantion of different technologies.

To have a play i suggest you install a linux distribution (virtually would be best) like debian, install apache and have a play around. Host some static pages. Understand how to get those pages available outside your personal LAN. Then work from there. You don't learn this stuff overnight, so start small and build your knowledge.

Once you have installed debian install apache 2 and host some content

1. apt-get install apache2

2. Then you can put a few static web pages in /var/www

3. Access them via the IP address of the debian machine from your web browser e.g 192.168.1.4.

There should be ample guides available on Google if you get stuck.

Good luck smile.gif

Why not just host it on something like Heroku (free unless you have crazy traffic)?
