Setting up a web server? - Page 2

post #11 of 18
I actually just went through this same thing. My web server is a windows 7 box running IIS. The setup process is relatively simple, but there are many other factors that come into play such as authoritative named servers, and DNS. There is of course static IP that are preferred, and if not dynamic DNS hosting services you would need to look into.

Thanks for the replies, also I would like to know how much will it cost me? I see I may require security software's?
As I have static IP, it will be under threat?
Should I source this from some company to build a web server? (But I think I can start small and build as I know how to build desktops)

I personally would run it from a VPS or the like - they're low cost and fairly secure.
I would not host it from home if you have any more than a few visitors, or if it is a business website.

Setting up my personal favourite web server (Lighty) is easy, in a fresh debian 6 x64 install:
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

apt-get install lighttpd

And that should set up the basics. All your website files then go in /var/www/
Next steps would be to set up PHP and its extensions, MySQL server, other tweaks, etc.
It's very easy to run multiple websites from the same box as well, here's what I use for PSUCalc's site in my lighttpd conf (/etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf):
Code:
$HTTP["host"] =~ "psucalc.net" {
        server.document-root            = "/var/www-psucalc.net"
}

You haven't said what platform you want to use.

I highly suggest Linux.

And don't buy a Dell/HP etc. for a home server, build it.

+1 on all of what he said. I vote Debian for the distro, but that's my personal preference.

A good choice,

Personally I'd suggest Ubuntu considering the OP sounds as though he's very new to this.
IMO the beginner guides for Ubuntu Server are among the best.

Yeah I agree, but nothing is really different between Debian and Ubuntu besides maybe documentation.

I'd say the repos are better and you get more pre-configured out of the box, but you're right they're both Debian so the differences are marginal.

The big thing for beginners is the documentation.
