I got a deal on a used xeon e3-1280 and I am building a new itx system around it since I need a smaller pc anyway. I will be using a p8h77-i. I need a small (probably top-down) cooler that will work with this board without overlapping anything. It will be going in a bitfenix prodigy and will not be overclocked.

Would the Scythe Big Shuriken 2 be any good for you? Very low profile cooler but also performs quite well.

Retails for around $30.

I was about to suggest BIG Shuriken as well but I see its already suggested. If you need lower and smaller than that then perhaps a water cooling kit - say a http://www.aquatuning.de/product_info.php/info/p13668_Alphacool-NexXxoS-Cool-Answer-120-LT-ST---kit.html - although it would be substantially more expensive than a Shuriken. on the positive side, however, this particular kit already has pretty small components - now the res /pump top combo is a bit low quality and also a bit too bulky probably for an ITX kit, however, for these pumps you can get a separate plexi top which is so small, that it would fit even inside ITX case without problems. The pump is about as big as 2 euros and approx 20mm thick and surprisingly effective for such a small one.

Yeah don't want to go with water. Honestly if it had a stock heatsink that would probably be fine so I don't need anything fancy. I am trying to downsize here to something smaller, simpler less expensive and exotic.

Why go with a Prodigy and then a small cooler? One of the nice features of the Prodigy is that it can take a full size heatsink. There are plenty out there that will work with that board.

If you truly want something small that won't overlap anything, take a look at this...about as small as you can get...

You might also look at the Samuel 17...I've used that in a couple LiLi builds and it did alright...

I am more concerned with it overlapping the board and clearing the memory. (Using corsair dominator platinum) If a tall cooler can work with that its fine bit I thought it was unlikely.

I needed something that could hold 2hdd and 2ssds so I picked this case. Plus I like the way it looks.

gotcha...yeah the dom platinums are really tall (have a couple sets myself) What you may have to do is go to a double fan downdraft/updraft style and lose the bottom fan...these new phanteks are supposed to be pretty decent...

Is turbo boost effected by cooling? Will cooler temps make it boost more often or is it purely a function of load level?

temps have nothing to do with turbo (aside from the fact that the cpu will get warmer the faster it runs) It is based on load level

I completely derped out and forgot I built an H61 itx build last year that used a Thermaltake Slim x3. Temps were decent super quiet and it fits without blocking ram or pci-e slots. I am assuming if it fits an h61 it should fit an h77. I don't know how I forgot about all that. lol
