OblyTile: A cool little program for making custom Win8 start tiles

This just makes Windows 8 so much better.

You can make tiles to open any program, and customize said tiles with any icon or background color you want. The result is a much more colorful start screen, even for those like myself who rarely use Metro apps.

Here's what my start screen looks like now:

Almost all of the "metro" looking tiles in this screenshot actually open desktop applications...including all the libraries, the Computer and Control Panel shortcuts, and the shut down/restart buttons (if you haven't put these on your start screen yet, do it already)

Apparently the developer is working on an update that supports double width tiles as well. But in its current state, it's still awesome. I just wish I could have that cool live slideshow of my pictures library without having to pin the stupid metro app.

Anyway, this should make life easier for anyone here who has Win8 already, since I know most of us here have pretty powerful desktops and are uninterested in full-screen metro apps.

You totally should! I was on the fence about the start screen; on one hand, I love the look. Live tiles are awesome and it makes sense to have a full screen start menu (more room for search results). On the other hand, I hated how every desktop app pinned to the start screen looked bland and boring.

This fixes that problem, and I now love the start screen smile.gif

Is there a site with custom made icons for the start screen or something similar?

I'm sure they will pop up in the near future. I also can't wait for this program to support larger tiles.

I've built a site that contains a collection of tiles I've found so far (and the ability to add links to others). Check it out here http://win8tiles.com/
It's searchable as well.

*edit: updated the URL to the more friendly URL I purchased for the site today.

I really really want this app to work but I keep getting this error whenever I try a shortcut that I have created that's not a steam game:

Or can someone please create a guide on how to use this app properly because that thread where the guy created it is so messy :/

By the way, seiggy your website is awesome!

*EDIT Fixed it. When I was making the shortcuts I'd copy the program location from the original shortcuts which had quotes on either side, remove the quotes and you remove the problem. *Facepalm

That looks great! Mind posting what program you used to change the background?
