[Build Log] White Corsair C70. Reimagine, Rebuild, Reboot.

Hey OCN,

I decided the write one of these for my sake, to chronicle my build. I appreciate any feedback that anyone else has as well.

History:

4 months ago I got back into PC building after a long Hiatus (my first build almost a decade ago featured an Athlon 2000+). I jumped in head first and started ordering components left and right and quickly had my Sig build "gaming". While a decent build, it lacks any sort of cable management, room for any water cooling options, and has no side panel window.

What a mess:

Case:

So for my rebuild I decided to start with a case. Enter, the Corsair Vengeance C70 in arctic white:

The corsair features everything I was missing from my previous case, mounting points for 2x 240mm radiators, dead space behind the motherboard to route cables including a channel with clips to secure cables in place. Removable side facing HDD slots with quick release feature. and a large side panel window.

I was initially drawn to the Corsair 600T but they are a little too large for my tastes. Also, the c70 is 100% metal which I appreciate, it seems like a good sturdy case and is only somewhat larger than my current case:

Components:

I ended up going with the i5-3570K (as opposed to the non-k in my current build.) and the ASRock Z77 Fatal1ty Professional board which I got for a steal after the 50$ (microcenter) discount for buying the CPU. The combo was only 320 before taxes . I know Fatal1ty has his name on too many things but its a cool looking board and it has 16+8 power phase design, 6 sata 3 ports, 8 USB 3.0 slots, and 2 pcie 3.0 x16 slots.

Since I decided on a red and black motherboard as well as a windowed case, I decided it wouldn't look good to reuse my blue ram and aqua PCB Gigabyte 7950 (even though it seems like an amazing card). I picked up a Visiontek 7970 Ghz edition while they were 10% off last week. Not sure if I want 2 of these, I will do some testing while I have both of them before I make a decision. It features a black PCB and a red fan shroud though so it matches really well.

I snagged a Corsair AX750 for 115 which should have no trouble powering my crossfire 7970s once I decide on a model.

I struggled with a ram choice because I initially wanted 2 red sticks and 2 black sticks but I also wanted an upgrade from my 2x8gb 1600mhz speed sticks that I currently had. I decided on 4x4Gb 2133mhz sticks from Gskill. They are all red, but it'll look good to have my slots filled

Thats all for now, I will probably get the intial components together this afternoon.

Cooling:

I like my Cooler Master 212+ and at 20 bucks I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good air cooler but since I am planning on going water cooled eventually I decided to take the in between step and order an h100. I was able to get one for under 80 dollars after rebate and the case, being by corsair, was basically designed for one. I have heard that mounting it in a push pull setup is not possible due to motherboard clearance but I will definitely try once I get it. I have 2 yate loon fans that are 20mm thick instead of 25mm thick. I am wondering if 4 of these would give me just the clearance I need. we will see.

Also, I ordered 2 red led fans for the front of the case and 2 white for this inside. I know a lot of people do colored LEDs inside but I got white because it will show the true colors of the components and since I am going out of my way to pick color match components, I figure that's worth something

Looking good so far! I am on the fence about a C70. I really like the black one and I may end up splurging for it to keep the size down on my next build thumb.gif

Picture update:

Fatal1ty board looks so cool and comes with so many cables and such, my MSI board came with 2 sata cables and that was it

Board installed. So this is what its like working with a proper sized case, it looks so empty in there.

Ram installed. I think it looks amazing. 4 sticks is def better than 2 sticks even if its the same amount of GB.

Individual thumb screws, nice!

Gunmetal Gray cpu socket and gold caps. Love it. Note the mouting holes for 775 cpu coolers. Good move ASRock.

The overclockable goodness that is the K series

Video card colors match the board well despite my washed out photos frown.gif

Stock CPU fan, for now. Actually this is the stock CPU fan from my celeron CPU which is slightly smaller and does not have a copper base. Sneaky Intel.

PSU installed, it looks really small in this case, its a standard length (160mm) which leaves enough room for a second 240mm radiator at the bottom.

Cables installed, soooo much better.

Initial cable routing is sloppy, the usb 3.0 cord seems excessively thick and long.

Hooray, it posted, Bios menu is better than both the biostar and MSI boards that I had. XMP profile took the ram to the correct settings and I am currently downloading windows so I can take it for a proper spin.

H100 is at my doorstep, too bad I am still at work! In other news, I ordered a XFX 7970 from TigerDirect last night. My plan is to run some benchmarks on both cards and try overclocking them to see which one I like better. To me the XFX is the best looking 7970 available currently, so if it performs I might order another and return the Visiontek to newegg.

I recieved my XFX video card over the weekend. All I can say is its beautiful. Runs just as well as the visiontek and is a lot sturdier. Sending the visiontek back but not before crossfiring them to see what its all about.

3dmark score with one card = 9000ish

3dmark score with 2 cards = 14000ish.

FPS shot up to almost double. I figured there would be bigger losses but crossfire is some amazing stuff. Ordered another XFX because the build quality makes the visiontek seem like a wet noodle.
