Help with a spare part, budget folding rig.

Thread Starter
Hey guys.

Im looking for some advice.

After my recent upgrade of my main rig, I have a spare mobo, 4GB ram and a sempron 145.
If I pair that up with a spare PSU of main, and a 5450 or 6450, How would it perform as a folder?
Im looking looking for 10000 PPD, Just something small, cheap and quiet I can leave running 24/7 in the corner and will sound barely like a whisper.

Thanks
Big Black Guy

Or I might upgrade my graphics in my main rig and put my current 6670 in the folder.

Unfortunately It isnt brilliant, however Im not going to be spending more than the price of a video card on this. I mainly do GPU folding though, So the CPU shouldn't matter right?

I hate to say this, but that machine is not going to come anywhere close to 10k ppd. Maybe 1500-ish ppd? I've never seen any stats for low end AMD cards like those, but if they are anything like low end Nvidia cards they will barely even make the deadlines.

The CPU shouldn't matter to much but I wouldn't go any lower then a sempron (if that is even possible).
Get something like a GTS 450, 550 Ti ect,

I just realized the typo. I meant to say im not looking for 10000 PPD.
The 6670 I have at the moment can get 2 or 3 units completed a day. I think im sitting around 7500 PPD on my main rig.
Would it better to get an ATI or NVIDIA low end, or upgrade like I said and use the 6670 to fold?

I would look for a GTS 450 like the other guy said, I have two and they average 8500ppd each, sometimes over 10k if the WU are good and you can get them for $50-60 if you look carefully. GT430/440 will do work as well, basically look for any low end Nvidia card that has 96 or more cuda cores. Don't look at low end keplers they are not the same.
