There were so many people on the servers, and virtually no reason to know anyone, no community, it was just there. What I mean by this is, in games like DAOC people on the same server would often know each other, in PvP (or RvR is what it was called by Mythic) you would know when a good group was out or a good player and everyone would know that person. With WoW''s system of cross realmed everything it completely killed any sort of community that was left in WoW and just made everyone the same basically with little variation.
It's hard to describe but I think that the above nailed it for me. Things have changed for the worse in the mmo genre I am afraid.
To answer the OP's question I play a mix of healing which I love and DPS. I prefer healing and believe that you are dead wrong on it being the same thing over and over. Sure you are hitting the same spells but situationally it's completely different. You need to pay attention to see who is diseased, cast cures, heals, Rez if people die. I would actually argue that DPS is more of a button mashing no brainer than healing. Just my opinion.

Speaking of other MMORPGs, there often are "most known" players, which are known by everyone except the newbies.

As for healing being varied, I've commented on it somewhere already.

As as healer, if I see a dps repeatedly doing something retarded, I can easily make them pay for it via letting them die. Yeah, they do yell, but then when the tank chimes in and backs me up, they quickly get quiet.[/quote]

Now that's poor judgement. Unless they don't listen when you tell them to not do it... But then again, it's better to kick him out and get a new member instead.

I usually play whatever is op at launch and then one tank or stealth class. Usually the tank or stealth class is one of the op ones so that makes it easier to decide.

I tend to do the opposite to be honest. I really do not like playing OP classes... they are so fotm and gazillion of them running around. I try to make the weaker classes, good.

One of the many examples of how the people who play MMO's have gone south also, because of the type of games they're given.

What do you suggest to do with someone who doesn't listen to reason? Some people are simply stubborn or stupid. If you're not gathering a party of known people, chances are, you'll be in a team with one. That's why people usually prefer to play an MMO with a friend more two. wink.gif

Because the games now reward someone for acting like an idiot, you can't wean them out by letting their stupidity cause them more grief than it causes you. Which is not entirely their fault, it's bad game design. But because players get their hands held from A to Z, they see no reason to hold anyone elses hand and teach them the alphabet. Training noobs used to be an enjoyable experience you earned after spending time to learn a game. If you caught someone acting like an idiot you smacked them around to demonstrate no matter how loud their mouth is it doesn't make up for the fact that they don't know crap, dragged them to a tavern or a garden, and explained the basic ettiquette and moral standard expected from the community as a whole. They listened 99.9% of the time, the other .1% found another game to play. Now players are so lazy they can't be bothered, and the game mechanics don't allow for it. By ignoring players who are the problem they perpetuate it and give it room to grow. And because game devs try to cater to that .1% just as much as they do the rest of the players.

You're making me miss FFXI before they destroyed it after the Wings of the Goddess expansion. Before that it rewarded your work and was NOT friendly to idiots. If you didn't pull your weight, no matter your party role, you were gone. And you could NOT solo to level cap through questing with repetitious junk. (And yes I played WoW too, nowhere near as rewarding) I haven't found a single MMO that's felt as good and as rewarding as FFXI did.

Played a BUNCH of MMOs though.

FFXI
WoW
EQ2
FFXIV
TERA
Rift
EVE
Fallen Earth (my god was this awful)
Guild Wars
Guild Wars 2
SWTOR
City of Heroes
Champions Online
Aion

etc etc, played a bunch of free ones too (pretty much all crap)

MMOs these days are just, "power level with quests and dungeons to max level with little to no interaction with other, then farm for raid gear, then raid" Sure they added 'harder' difficulties but it's still the same basic principal and it's already gotten old. Waiting for something to come along that actually holds my interest for more than a month or so.

I usually start with the DD Mage class, it is always a ton of fun to solo. (enfeeble, nuke, sleep, nuke) Then move on to the pet jobs mostly because they are cute. =P

Off-Topic'ish...

A hundred times this! Took forever to get my first job to the then 75lvl cap. When WotG hit, I had every single job to the new 99lvl cap in under a month with out even trying once I decided to cap everything.
With any luck FFXIV 2.0 will be much, much better. The director of CoP (the best expansion in the game) is now leading it.

I generally am a tank. In Eve, I have a tengu that can go into a C4 and completely tank 18 battleships, 10 cruisers, and 30 frigs that lay on around 1300DPS.
