The problem is i do a lot of sketching and formula-writing which is difficult on a conventional laptop. I fully understand that the tablet is not necessary but its just more of a convenience rather than a necessity. Also, while on the bus and stuff (for hours at a time as I drive out with the swim team to far-off pools), I would feel far more comfortable whipping out my tablet rather than my laptop.

Azn,we did have many students with laptops (in IT based classes) takes notes on their laptops but they were really writing to a server at their home.I have read that some schools monitor tests taken in the computer commons with a web cam.I guess they want to make sure you are not "googling" for the answer. This is a big problem with the CISCO CCNA classes. If you do not study hard,or you have a problem with how CISCO words tests, it is very tempting to go online for the answers, as the full test has made its way to the internet. No reason to not score 100% but you are only cheating yourself. In reality we are told the test is "open book, open notes, open internet but copying off an exact reproduction of the test you are taking is stretching things. In Novell class the tests ere True/False and you had one chance to change your answer after a group review.Believe it or not some still missed the answer.

Ahhh, I see. Well I can assure you that I'm not using the tablet or laptop for malicious purposes : )

Why are you still undecided..?

This is a no-brainer for nearly anyone who is in your situation..    the MS Surface comes with MS Office...   and a keyboard.

Why would you even be considering anything else..   You already said u have a PC at home.. the Surface has USB and MicroSD slots for file transfer and you can even PRINT directly from a MS Surface.

I think I will go for the Surface, as I am familiar with Windows OS. I just wanted for people's opinions as it is quite pricey.

I love my surface, its a great tablet. I just wish I could afford the keyboard at the same time lol. I'll just buy that part later.

I just wanted to note that if youre not allowed on the network with android tablets/phones its because the IT dept at your school doesn't know how or hasn't published documentation for getting them connected to 802.1x yet not because of some Apple contract...lol and certainly not because of your tablets build specs/quality.
