ASRock X58 Extreme3 + i7 930 overclocking - bus speed floating!

Thread Starter
I've had this board and cpu around for 2 years and finally decided to overclock them. Following a couple of guides on the internet i've been working on the BCLK first, by relaxing the CPU and DRAM multipliers.

I've seemed to have hit a ceiling around 180 and i'm now fiddling with the voltages trying to get to 190-200.

In one of my tests at 182, i noticed something very strange on OCCT. The bus speed, even though is set at 182, floats wildly, up to 290 Mhz!

Any ideas on why this is happening ?

Additional info:
Load temperatures average at 60ºC for all cores (just installed a venomous, the temperatures dropped phenomenally!)

BIOS Settings:

BCLK 182
CPU Ratio 12x
QPI Frequency Auto
Uncore Frequency Auto
DRAM Frequency 546Mhz

C1E Disabled
Virtualization Tech Enabled
CPU Thermal Throttling Enabled
NoExecute Memory Protection Disabled
Intel HT Enabled
A20M Disabled
SpeedStep Disabled
C-State tech Disabled

Spread Spectrum Disabled
Intelligent Energy Saver Disabled
Vdroop Control Without Vdroop

CPU Vcore 1.2
DRAM Voltage 1.654
IOH Voltage 1.203
VTT Voltage 1.48
ICH Voltage 1.2
IOH/CSI Voltage 1.2
IOH/ICH PCIE Voltage 1.52
CPU PLL 1.88

I've tried searching the internet and these forums but couldn't found anything similar (perhaps i'm missing the correct search terms). If this has been brought before i apologize.

Cheers!

BCLK does float, but not by that much I should not think. A BIOS reading error? Try using a different program to measure it.

Hey Gerr,

At the time i did have CPU-Z opened, but i only checked it after cancelling OCCT. The Bus speed was indeed floating between 182 and 210-220 for a while, before stabilizing at 182.

I just finished running another run of OCCT for 10 minutes with everything set to stock. Both OCCT and CPU-Z reported a rock-solid bus speed of 133 through out the test.

You mentioned BCLK does float... what's the acceptable/normal variance?

I'll do some more tests later after work but i'll keep checking here.

Thanks!

It normally floats about 1-3 points. never seen it float more in my personal experience.

Try a stress with Prime95 instead of OCCT.

Ok, i did two things beforehand, after reading a couple of threads. Specifically, about the NB heating a lot on this board. So i moved the VGA card down to the other PCIE, to leave more space on the NB. Also put a big ass noctua fan blowing air into the NB heatsink (it's kind of hanging on the VGA cooler, need a better solution).

Back at the same settings of my original post (BCLK 182) ran 10 mins of LinX and 20 mins of Prime 95. BCLK was rock stable. Might be hope after all smile.gif

Going to bump the BLCK up! 200, here we go smile.gif

Thanks, and i'll keep posting the progress.

Cheers!

Ah yeah I never even thought to mention that, it could be getting too hot smile.gif

Glad it is sorted smile.gif

On my HTPC rig, my stock Althon II reported some weird bus issues as well.. Watching AIDA64 reports nothing funny.

I would agree its a reporting bug. I am having a few BSODs recently, but if my bus speed really dropped that low, I would have BSODed during the test. I also ran Prime95 while OCT was idling, and the real time graph showed the same dips, and im 12hrs Prime95 stable..
