Mainsil’s Merlin

Project completed, you can jump to the end here.

Introduction
Hello OCN. I'm new here but I've really enjoyed lurking the build logs and thought I would share my project. I didn't know what to call it, so just named it after the case. This will be a quick and easy (I hope) water-cooling project, I'm new to this so I won't be doing anything fancy.

The Plan
I will start with an air cooled system and an old graphics card and make sure everything works, and figure where to put the pieces. Then, I will water cool the CPU, putting a 120.4 radiator in the top, and make sure it works. And, finally, add a secondary radiator (probably a 140.2 at front) and the GPU(s). Overclocking will not be a priority.

Components
Air cooled components ordered October 12th
I received everything for an air cooled machine by Thursday the 18th:

• Caselabs: Merlin SM8

• Asus P9X79 Pro LGA 2011 Motherboard

• Intel Core i7 3820

• G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 32 GB (4x8GB)
• Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO RR-212E-20PK-R2 Continuous contact Sleeve CPU Cooler(Temporary use)
• Samsung 830 Series 2.5 inch 256 GB Sata III MLC SSD

• Corsair Professional Series AX 1200 Watt ATX/EPS Modular Plus Gold (AX1200)

• 2 Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB, 7200 RPM

Stage 1 Complete – Basic box assembled and tested. It’s hard to believe that the Merlin is Caselab’s smallest case. The motherboard sure looks small in there…The only downside so far is that the motherboard only has one internal USB 3.0 header.

Stage 2 – Order the components for CPU water cooling
I plan on using the motherboard CPU fan header on the PWM fans to avoid buying a controller if possible. The Akasa Flexa allows multiple fans to be signaled by the motherboard while supplying power from a power supply molex. I like the idea of not generating extra heat that comes with voltage control of three pin fans, but am a little concerned about the reported buzzing that can sometimes come from PWM fans. In any case, I decided to test it.

I got both -cu and -phn since I don't yet know what, if anything, else I may put in my water.

Water cooling parts ordered October 21st
• Casters for Case
• Drop in 120.4 mount
• MCP655 pump
• XSPC Raystorm CPU Block
• 8 Noctua NF-F12 PWM Cooling Fan
• 4 Fitting Pair, Compression for 10mmx13mm (3/8 in x 1/2 in)
• 2 VL3N Quick Disconnect No-Spill Coupling, Female for 10mmx13mm (3/8 in x 1/2 in)
• 2 VL3N Quick Disconnect No-Spill Coupling, male for 10mmx13mm (3/8 in x 1/2 in)
• Akasa Flexa FP5 PWM 5-Way Splitter - Smart Fan Cable (AK-CBFA03-45)
• Alphacool NexXxoS UT60 Full Copper Quad 120mm Radiator
• Tygon 2475 Ultra Chemical Resistant Plasticizer Free Tubing - 3/8" ID (1/2" OD) - Clear
• XSPC Tank Reservoir - Laing D5 / MCP655 w/ Blue LED Light – Acrylic
• PT Nuke (both –phn and –cu), need to decide which to use…

Parts Ordered October 30th from Caselabs to raise pump:
• 1 x Attachment Plate - Small
• 1 x Accessory Mount, V & H SM8
Ordered more Koolance fittings to avoid kinks in tubing on October 31st.

While waiting for parts, I thought I would comment on what I’ve gotten so far. I’m pretty happy with the major components so far:

The Caselabs Merlin SM8 case
I love the case so far, Caselabs reputation for quality is well deserved. The case is very solid and it is apparent that a lot of thought was put into its design. I particularly like the removable motherboard tray, excellent cable management features, and the two hard drive mounts and the mount for two ssd drives on the cable side of the cabinet. However, I can see why some might not like it. This case is pure, high quality function but it doesn't have bling.

Corsair Professional Series AX1200 Power supply
The price was a bit steep, but I’m really impressed with the quality I’ve seen so far. There is a good variety of cables, some of differing lengths making it easier to find an OK length. The cables themselves are not nearly as pretty as the custom wrapped cables you see in some of the advanced builds, but they are neat and unobtrusive.

ASUS P9X79 Pro LGA 2011 Motherboard
I bought this one because the reviews were pretty good, and I liked the color. Everything seems to work as advertised. The only complaint I have so far is that I had to do some research to find out how to get it recognize my DDR3 2400 Ram at full speed. (It turns out you have to go into AI Tweaker-> AI Overclock Tuner and set it to X.M.P). It is in the manual, but it was not clear to me at all. Additiionally, further down the list there is a clearly labled "Memory Frequency" that resulted in crashes when I pushed far enough so I couldn't get to 2400. I can see this causing a lot of people to return perfectly good RAM.

G.Skill Ripjaw Z series RAM
It took me an hour or so to find the correct settings in BIOS (see BIOS above), but it performs as advertised, and I’m really happy about that. The downsides are minor. It is not as attractive as I thought it would be. Additionally, the little cooling fans it comes with wouldn’t fit with my temporary cpu air cooled heat sink. I’m not sure there are many aftermarket heat sinks that these fans would be compatible with.

I haven't really tested the hard drives yet other than seeing that they are recognized and playing around a bit in Linux. I'm waiting on Windows 8 this weekend. I figure now is as good a time as any to bite the bullet and learn the new interface. I don't expect it to be an improvement, but then, I didn't see the need for windows 3.0 and the GUI interface; I thought DOS was just fine. tongue.gif

I came home from work and found that I got some three pakcages; the wheels and drop in radiator mount from caselabs, and recieved the Noctua NF-F12 fans and the XSPC raystorm cpu waterblock.

I'm left scratching my head wondering why such a nice fan is made in colors that just don't go with most cases.
[

I put four of the fans into the caselabs drop in mount and plugged them into the motherboard. They come with some nice features and are pretty quiet so far. Unfortunately they are quite visible behind the grill. Maybe I will get used to them. I also installed the wheels from caselabs, and boy what a difference that makes! It is so easy to pop the computer in and out from under the desk now.

Edit: A picture to show what the fans look like once behind the grill just in case there is any doubt.

Minor puzzle: I plugged two fans into the CPU2 header, and two fans into a chassis header on the motherboard using the supplied PWM splitter cables. The CPU2 header spins the fans signifcantly slower than the case2 header, even when running mprime.

Three new packages today.

The MCP655 Pump:

Some Koolance fittings:

And this cool PWM splitter that will allow up to 5 PWM fans to be controlled from 1 motherboard header. Power comes from the power supply via a molex connector, only one fan communicates its rotation speed to the motherboard (other connectors have that pin missing), and the PWM signal is distributed to all the fans. Seems to be working OK so far, but the real test will be when it goes to water.

Ahem, on a more dignified note; welcome. More photos coming right up. It looks like I had a nice big box waiting for me today. Could it be?

Yes! The radiator, tubing, and reservoir.

The reservoir is about what I expected and is easy enough to work with. Only has one in port, one out port, and a larger hole that is probably a fill port.

I am most excited about the radiator.

Very nice looking copper fittings (plugs and screws). If I had pretty fans this would be awesome.

The paint finish on the outside isn't all that good, but it is the inside that is important.

This may be hard to see, but there is a rust colored discolaration visible on the fins when looked at from an angle. This appears to be copper peaking through the thin coating of paint on the radiators and is actually a good thing since the copper conducts heat away a lot better than paint.

I flushed the radiator with hot tap water in my utility room. Since the tubing was too small to fit around the faucet, I took the strainer off and stuffed the hose up into the faucet. Much to my surprise it worked really well.

I think I will be attempting fill the loop from the radiator (when i get to that point) since that is the highest point. Hopefully that won't be overly painful. However, I haven't quite figured out how to drain the loop. Will have to see what I can work up once the pieces are in place.
