My capstone idea for the future! opinions?

My professors have been telling us to start thinking of possible capstones for next year (well may be next year for me, might take a few extra classes before i graduate) and one thing i have been pondering lately for a possibility is; bear with me, idk if this is stupid or too easy in your opinion but..

what if i were to do some sort of arduino-ish project and make a little device that could in laments terms, send a ping, maybe of sonar, or maybe use cameras to in a given environment construct a 3d model of the room! i think that sounds fun and would be a task to complete but would be awesome biggrin.gif

like i said that's as far as i have gotten just in the idea phase of everything! What do you guys think!?

Don't do sonar, you will tear your hair out once you realize that it will have to handle how the pulse behaves on different materials.

With cameras (plural) this task is much easier, just run them in a binocular fashion (like human eyes) and getting depths becomes a rather easy task with them.

Put the camera rig on a two servo run platform that can spin on x and y axis (literally less than 15 lines on Arduino).

With this above you can get all the measurements you want, how you build the model, that's up to you (I suggest trying AutoCAD style DWGs).

thanks man biggrin.gif and like i said i literally just came up with the idea like last week! and yeah i didnt really mean sonar but thats kinda how i visioned it in my head, like look this way, okay got it, now another way! Who knows if i will even do it! Just was thinking biggrin.gif it sounds fun to me!

If you do decide to go this route and know some Python, I highly suggest you check out SimpleCV; They have a brand new StereoCamera implementation that looks promising.
