Very interesting, hopefully I can test it out when it is released, maybe this gain supposed to be just from refinement of the driver, with the same image quality standards? Hard to believe this late in generation that drivers can still improve performance measurably.

Too little too late? Funny you say that, considering AMD's products continue to offer better performance/price (the only figure that really matters) over nVidia's overpriced and voltage-control-less lineup.

I lol'd thank you. Not everyone who buys technology is 14 with their parent's credit card.

I suppose it's also true not everyone has to support their family or pay for their own education. Enjoy it.

A 7970 GHZ Edition vs stock 680 is 4% faster. A stock 7970 is 6% slower than a stock 680. This is with the new drivers. I'll believe 3rd party review sites over a company exaggerating their product/drivers. No reviews claim a 15% gain or the 7970 GHz edition being anywhere near 20% faster than a GTX 680. They've once again removed the gap created by 6XX driver updates, bringing the products neck and neck again. Anyone saying there is a clear winner is being a fanboy or buying into company advertisement.

The difference depends on the test settings and the resolution and the game suite. Actually the HD 7970 Ghz is atleast 10 - 15% faster at 1600p. Once the settings are maxed out at 1600p the gap is at 15%.

AMD's achilles heel - the Frostbite 2 engine performance which affected BF3 sees the biggest gain. Reviews are showing the HD 7970 Ghz gains anywhere from 10 - 30% depending on the map and the specific test case.

As far as gain in BF3 is concerned its very significant and puts HD 7970 Ghz ahead of GTX 680 across the board. in few reviews the HD 7970 Ghz now boasts of 20% better performance than GTX 680 .

1920 X 1080 Ultra 4x MSAA
HD 7970 Ghz (12.11) - 78.8 fps
GTX 680 - 65.2 fps

http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/46905-amd-catalyst-1211-benchmarked-surprising-performance-gains/?page=3

HD 7970 Ghz (12.11) - 67.9
GTX 680 - 55.6

Nvidia's GTX 680/ 670/ 660 Ti now need a price correction to atleast USD 400/ 330/270 given that AMD's game bundle is strongest on HD 7900 series.

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/57413-amd-12-11-never-settle-driver-performance-17.html

"As you read this conclusion, be certain there’s someone at NVIDIA’s headquarters pressing a red panic button. Where AMD was once trailing, they are now leading in several performance disciplines and are doing so with lower prices as well. This situation isn’t only due a driver team's ability to increase the HD 7000-series’ overall performance. NVIDIA’s suddenly unenviable position largely stems from a combination of AMD’s earlier price cuts, the newly realized framerate increases and a very aggressive promotion bundle that can include over $100 of free games. For anyone that hasn’t taken the plunge into this generation of graphics cards, AMD’s offerings are once again extremely enticing. "

"To head AMD off before the lucrative Christmas shopping season, the 600-series needs price drops and a continuation of the Borderlands 2 and Assassin's Creed bundles to remain competitive."

No shock here. Ati had been doing the same thing for years now. Kudos to Amd for not screwing that up.

What is shocking is Nvidia's lack of performance improvements in the driver department.

It seems "good enough" has been their motto as of late.

Looks like some of us will really have to look hard at the next generation.
