Quote:
After exhaustive testing of AMD's new Catalyst 12.11 driver, we can confirm that it brings significant performance improvements with every single game we tested. The differences vary by game. The highlights were Battlefield 3, Sleeping Dogs, Star Craft II, and World of Warcraft. This driver also fixes a bug that caused low performance in Dragon Age 2. I didn't expect the low performance in Dragon Age 2 to be fixed at all given that it is a relatively old title. It shows that AMD did take a real close look at game performance.
I also find it surprising that benchmarks like 3DMark 11 and Unigine Heaven saw good gains - something that typically does not happen during "normal" driver updates.

Our testing also confirms that these performance benefits are only for Radeon HD 7000 cards since the HD 6970 in our test group saw no improvements.

Actual performance improvements vary between cards. Improvements start with 4% for the HD 7750 and reach an amazing 10% for the HD 7870. The HD 7950, HD 7970 and HD 7970 GHz Edition settle in at 7%. Single digit improvements may not sound like much, but these results are the biggest performance boosts we've ever seen through a driver update. Especially the 10% on the HD 7870 made it feel like a completely different card while gaming..

Quote:
AMD has been pushing PC gaming and the "Never Settle" slogan since 2011 and it appears that the company has no plans to end that going into 2013. AMD is serious about graphics performance and they should be as that is the companies strong point right now in the PC market place. The slogan makes sense though as most gamers, like you, never settle for less than the best. You want your hardware to play as hard as you do and that means it has to perform like you want it to. Today, AMD is making two big announcements. First, they are announcing some very impressive game bundles for those that are looking to buy a Radeon HD graphics card this fall and holiday shopping season. Secondly, they are announcing 'The Never Settle Driver' (Catalyst 12.11) that offers significant performance improvements in pretty much every game and benchmark available.

When it comes to the AMD Catalyst 12.11 drivers, we are impressed that AMD was able to get such a nice performance improvement across the board. AMD's Graphics Core Next (GCN) GPU architecture was introduced in December 2011, so we honestly figured that AMD had already wrangled all the performance the could from it. We were told from AMD that it took this long to really look at how the new architecture works and to fully utilize everything in there. The AMD Catalyst 12.11 driver gives a noticeable performance boost in the vast majority of the game titles that we tried it out. We have no complaints there and it doesn't appear that AMD is doing anything fishy to get the performance boost. We looked for image quality differences and renamed the executable file for 3DMark11 and other benchmarks. No differences were seen when looking for known exploit methods, but you never know. You'll be able to download these drivers later this week and try them out for yourself and we highly advise in doing so.

Fresh off the press, ladies and gentlemen.

I guess they'll be scrapping 12.9 and 12.10?

The WHQL versions of 12.9 was scrapped, yes, but the beta 12.9 was extensively tested by the public. The code from 12.9 will debut, with additional stability/fixes, as the 12.10 WHQL driver to coincide with Windows 8. Then we took that 12.10 driver, branched the code, and started building in performance enhancements to give you the 12.11 Beta driver you see today. We'll work on that beta code base until we can turn it into the 12.11 or 12.12 WHQL driver, depending on the month it's finally ready.

In parallel to developing the next WHQL driver, we'll start work on the 12.12 or 13.1 beta. smile.gif

Are these just normal optimization in the hardware side or is it more like the Catalyst AI things that sacrifice small image quality for performance gains? Going to read the article I guess..

Just saw this line, "Over the past 11 months AMD has been able to study the new GPU architecture and figure out what can be done to improve performance." Sounds great, was hoping the driver quality would keep improving ever since they said they weren't doing monthly driver releases. Never really had an issue with AMD drivers and that's with Catalyst AI disabled for the majority (90%+) of my games.

Driver team did great with these drivers; TPU gave a nice thorough review I can't wait until I can get my hands on a 8970.

I'm very happy with 12.9 with my three GPU's for some reason both rigs I have used with black ops has had artifacts since I used 11.12. Black ops runs perfect on 11.12. Still waiting for fix for this.

Is this for real? Really a 7% increase on the high-end cards and even 10% for the HD7870?

Reviewers should do a complete new matchup between Nvidia and AMD cards. I wonder if the tests would now show different results/benchmarks.
