Except that they don't trade blows now. AMD's flagship now outperforms NV's flagship across the board, and consistently. A quick example of this is 12.11b performance with the Frostbite 2.0 engine. BF3 is the most popular game currently utilizing this engine, and this was the last major game engine left where NV had a clear lead. AMD has now erased that. They've snatched BF3 which was formerly the NV's 600 series strong hold.

Now Nvidia has nothing major where it wins and still 15-20 games where it trails to AMD. The 7000 series is now a more well-rounded card and once again, closing the BF3 gap was the last area necessary to win in 4 out of 4 of the most GPU demanding games this generation (BF3, Metro 2033, Crysis 1/Warhead, Witcher 2 EE).

For people who bought 7000 series cards this generation, this recent 12.11b driver is simply awesome since they not only get more value, but can now boast having faster performance as well when compared to GTX 600 cards at similar price levels.

Remember:

The HD7970 competes with the GTX670, not 680, and WINS.

The HD7970 GE competes with GTX680, and WINS.

Anandtech showed a 29% performance increase with 12.11b on the standard 925Mhz HD 7970, which puts it slightly above in many instances, but probably mostly on par with the 680. This means that HD 7970 GE is at least 10% faster than 680.

The 680 now loses not only to the 7970 GE, but even to the 7970 on more than a few titles/benchmarks. At 1600P, the 7970 GE is now 15% faster, which means it's 20-25% faster than the 670, which the standard 7970 competes with.

Virtually all "standard reference 7970's" can be brought to GE performance levels with a slight OC, so that is another thing to consider for the prospective high-end GPU buyer.

And lastly, the last bit of your comment regarding drivers being unacceptable is simply silly, especially considering that AMD's high-end cards were already even/faster at each price level, especially the HD7970 & 7970 GE which already performed equally/better than GTX670/680 since before 12.11b.

Going by what I've been seeing across the net today, I must say that It's pretty obnoxious seeing Nvidia fanboyism and shilling so rabidly entrenched that they can't even appreciate something that will eventually benefit everyone. So AMD has upped the ante and managed to surpass Nvidia for the performance/value crown. I don't see why that is so bad/hard to swallow for some people. AMD should be commended for this latest effort, not downplayed.

Is nvidia sleeping? tongue.gif

Nevermind that, things looking good for AMD. I guess my next card will be some AMD card with excellent performance:price ratio. Though I think it can't beat how happy I was shifting from a 9400GT to a 5670HD at the given price tongue.gif

Fanboy less, articulate more.

To OC the mem you could try a different program to OC like Afterburner or Trixx, otherwise yes a bios could potentially allow for high mem clock if yours curent one is just holding you back. I will advise you know what you're doing before you try it and make sure to get the correct BIOS for your specific card.

another thing swing of momentum towards AMD, as long as they keep voltages unlocked buying new gpus might become an AMD no brainer.

This.

MSI Lightning HD 7970s aren't heavily overclocked they run at 1070mhz.

And my GTX 680s run at the default 1050mhz and the HD 7970s run at their default. So pretty much clock for clock the HD 7970 xfire is destroying the GTX 680 SLI. Sorry fan boys but let it go, you're all wrong.

Nvidia has a lot still going for them (drivers, vsync that works, power consumption) but the performance crown is no longer one of them.
