Sapphire 7970 OC Dual-X water block Issue

Thread Starter
Im running the Sapphire 7970 OC Dual-X edition card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102982) and bought the koolance VID-AR-797 waterblock (http://koolance.com/vid-ar797-video-card-vga-amd-radeon-hd-7970-water-block).

The problem i am having is that after I installed the block, the block doesnt seem to be making full contact with the gpu die. Total surface are of the block touching the gpu die is about a grain of rice, or less. Also, the memory pad impressions are very light. The card is reference PCB (getting it confirmed by sapphire atm) so im not sure whats up. Ive seen videos of the card working with other water blocks

Spent time emailing coolance and they confirmed that its not normal for this to happen and suggested that it may be the standoffs; but they look fine. Before I RMA the block for a new one or just sell it (cost too much to return it; cheap ass koolance) I wanna know the following:

1. Has anyone had similar problems with refurb blocks like mine
2. Did AMD/Sapphire lower the gpu die

Put it back on and use a flashlight see where the gaps are? Btw, did you spread the tim on the die?

How big is the gap? Maybe add some more TIM and try?

The gaps are at the cpu die. thats why when you look at the block there are small pieces (for lack of better words) of TIM on the block.

When i tried that i got the system to boot, but looking in HW monitor the temp shot up 25 degrees every second before I switched off the power supply.

So here is what Sapphire was able to tell m. Read from bottom up:

2012-10-25 [01:12]

We do not have this type of info here, if the water block doesnt fit right, i wouldnt suggest you to use, because modfication of the cooling unit is consider void of warranty, so if you card does fry up you wont have valid warranty for RMA service.

2012-10-24 [14:34]

Well the block fits on the card just fine, however there seems to be a 1mm gap between the GPU die and the water block. So the capacitors haven't been moved at all but something either got raised or lowered. My question is what specifically got raised or lowered? Was it a capacitor, the GPU die, or something else?

2012-10-24 [06:59]

The lay out of the capacitor may not be the same as the reference board design, because it needs to fit an aftermarket fan unit.

2012-10-24 [06:48]

I'm sorry. What is it that makes this card non-reference pcb? For instance, some companies rearrange the capacitors, or change the height of the CPU die.

2012-10-24 [01:22]

What do you mean?

2012-10-23 [12:13]

What mas this card non-reference pcb?

2012-10-23 [01:48]

No this card is not reference design.

So now im assuming he has no idea and doesnt know who would. I wonder if they would swap me a reference card?? wink.gif maybe?

they won't swap you anything, you voided your warranty.. How thick are your thermal pads? I know for my 7970 dual X some of the pads needed to be .5mm thick and some needed to be 1mm thick

With the red pads being .5mm thick and the blue being 1mm thick. At least thats how it is with my EK block...

I tried to cut corners and leave the thermal pads they had on there but those were much too thick.

If they make the assumption im actually talking about my card. My original question was based off of what i was reading from a forum site =D. Tricky Tricky. I doubt theyll do it tho.

The pads i was using are .7 and 1.0. I even went as far as to use no thermal pads and still no luck.

Anyone know where I could get my hands on an 7970 X-bracket??

switch to .5mm, worth trying for $4 as you are obviously making a little bit of contact.

When i tried fitting the block again today, it seems that the .7mm pads just might be blocking it so i think ill try 0.5mm pads after all. with no pads the die hits the block no prob. I thought when i tried in the past w/ the pads it still didnt fit.....weird. w/e lol. will update when i get the pads

Not yet, still trying to find other places that sell these pads reasonably. Frozencpu has then cheap but wanna charge $5 to ship. That's outrageous lol. Might have to get them tho, I'm not finding places that have them.
