Need ideas for htpc

Thread Starter
well i'm planning on selling my ps3 and just getting a htpc so its easier for my parents to use

need a system that can stream 1080p video to a 50inch tv

I want a machine that is quiet and efficient.

instead of selling my old computer parts, i was thinking of reusing them

Thinking of reusing:

e8400
maybe 8800gt? or buy a cheap gpu with hdmi
2gb ram
optical drive
i have the ssd/hardrive covered

would need a 775 micro atx motherboard, case, psu and etc

what do you guys think?

That would make a great HTPC smile.gif And if you want to, you can purchase a remote controller (Bluetooth or CIR), and use XBMC on it. If you want the HTPC to be really easy to use for your parents, I believe you could install XBMC only on it (some sort of Linux, I can't remember) - if this makes any sense tongue.gif

But don't worry, some more capable people will probably come around soon smile.gif

that will easily handle htpc duties, if you dont need to use hdmi you could always find a mobo with digi optical or coaxial out, or one wtih an spdif header and do it that way smile.gif are you going to use areciever/amp or....
optical out used to be found on a fair few boards what connections does the tv have?

Hi,

There's plenty of power there... you can even undervolt your E8400 to make it run cooler and quieter.

XBMC is good on Windows now too if you prefer to do that instead of a Linux build.

HDMI is the best option if you have that on the 8800GT.... alot of Micro-ATX motherboards have integrated graphics and HDMI, making the 8800GT obsolete.

Have you considered ITX?

Zotac make some cracking 775 ITX boards, with built-in graphics and built-in wifi if that helps! http://www.zotacusa.com/zotac-g41-itx-g41itx-a-e.html

Whereabouts are you based?

Cheers,

DB

i'm in canada if thats what you meant tongue.gif

umm i won't be downloading xmbc most likely, this is just for youtube, streaming dvd rips, browsing on a 50 inch tv

I just found a old e6400 so hopefully that still works.

I mean, i could probably sell my ps3 for 200 and build a htpc for under 200, and it'll be a lot more useful than a ps3 smile.gif

thanks for the input guys

I was wondering what everyones opinion was about the ml03b case for 55~ bucks? is there a better option? I would prefer it to be a low profile case that would look nice in my tv stand.

ML03B takes a full size ATX PSU, so if you have a spare one of those that will help with costs too. It will only take low-profile expansion cards... so prob not your 8800GT but ideal for TV tuners. If you get a Micro-ATX board with built in IGP and HDMI then no problems there.

I've had a few computers hooked up to a 50" and have found HDMI to be the best way to do it.

E6400 chip will be plenty for that stuff and more!

Download K-Lite Codec Pack and use MPC-HC... it will use hardware acceleration even on the Intel built-in graphics.

Cheers,

DB

I believe Ironman517 meant his post as an example. I use worse parts than you, so all you should find is a mini-ITX LGA775 board and an acommodating case smile.gif
