Man, Sony has stripped the PS3 of everything. IT ONLY DOES NOTHING ANYMORE should be the new slogan. They really used to push it as a superior do all machine and now look at it. A shell of its former self mad.gif

Well if its anything like mine, it has a lot of uses, It holds down an entire shelf of my AV stand, and seems to be the best dust collector on the rack. biggrin.gif

Is there any other way that we can work around this? And does anyone know what the PS4 will have in terms of components that might make folding even faster if we could some how jerry-rig something to work?

never got into it when I had the fat PS3 because I was scared of strain on the system causing YLOD

Wouldn't new PCs benefit the program more than the aging PS3?

I know the Cell Processor used to be considered a super-computer component (I'm sure its variant is still considered to be one these days...no?)

It wasn't doing any harm... if the contribution was that low, then Intel should disable F@H on all pre-45nm processors, because they draw a lot of power for piddly PPD.

It wasn't necessary to remove it, it doesn't make any sense. It's sad.

Look, this might suck for the F@H cause, but in reality the PS3 is aging hardware and can probably be easily outdone by laptops these days. I would venture to guess that you will see F@H back in action on the PS4. I folded for team OCN on my PS3 and it really didn't do much to help the cause considering my desktop was doing 10x as much work with less power draw and at a faster pace.

Absolutely no reason to do this.

See I could understand if it was Sonys energy and PS3 that we were using to do this, but it is not. It is OUR energy bill and OUR PS3..........

This is just frustrating, but I am at the same time glad I am not a console gamer any more, for this reason.......no control over what is done with the gaming device whatsoever.

This is actually true. My Trinity APU laptop, which doesn't currently support the GPU for folding, does about 2200-2600 PPD on the processor alone. That's way more powerful than what the Cell processor can do, and that's on a pretty weak laptop CPU that uses a fraction of the power compared to Cell.

Still, no reason for Sony to stop support. That will be another bad PR move by them. Digging their grave further... rolleyes.gif

It was a great way for tons of PS3 owners to contribute to F@H! Sorry to hear Sony is discontinuing this.
