Done Messed Up Something Good

Thread Starter
So, I shipped my PC with the GPU installed and now something's not right.

Before I eventually removed the card, I was getting aberrations on the display such as uniform lines and shapes across the entire screen as well as color distortions.

I was able to fix things temporarily by powering off and making fine adjustments to the seating. It will then be fine for a little while but might go out of whack randomly.

I was also getting occasional driver crashes with two different drivers for this card (the older one I never had a single problem with until after shipment).

Upon inspection, nothing appears broken, but the card is sitting crooked in the case now (the case itself is solid and seemingly square/untweaked).

I don't have access to another card to try out, and at this point I'm not sure what to do. The only thing I'm considering trying is tweaking the mounting bracket on the back of the card so that the rear portion (left side as pictured) will sit down more.

It looks as though the PCI-E port could have been damaged.... If it's not that then check the slots on the case to see if those are bent out of place.

Upon inspection, the two lower tabs on the back of the card were bent, which I believe explains the mounting issue. I've straightened them back and so far everything's okay. It does still seem sensitive though; for example, lightly jostling the case (which I probably shouldn't do) yields brief screen aberrations.

In addition to the tabs getting bent, I think the PCI slot may have been damaged because there appears to be more side-to-side play (perpendicular to the direction the card runs). Time will tell if it will work okay as-is.

You might need to get your soldering iron out, but it should be fine now biggrin.gif

It may have bent when you pushed it back in or something.

Looks as if the PCIe socket is coming up slightly from the mobo, which would explain the sensitivity.

It might need to be encouraged to stay down, Maybe unsolder and solder back on

Well, it worked well for about a day. On shut down everything was good, start up the next morning and I'm having the same problem as before. Aside from solder work, what should I do at this point?

Solder work.
You can't do much else if the leads are lifting from the through holes.
You could also try to "bake it" with some weight on the PCIe slot.

So if I don't want to attempt such work by myself, I guess I'm pretty much screwed or left trying to deal with the manufacturer?

Yeah. You can try to RMA, say that the video card is acting strange, you've tried different PSUs and cards in the rig and found instability, yet the same cards/PSUs are fine in other systems.
