The weird thing though, is that sometimes my card can get to 71 / 72, without freezing, but is always 71 / 72 when it does freeze (if that makes sense). My card is currently running 12.11 Beta 11 + CAP 2, at 975mhz core and 1100mhz memory.
I thought this might have been an issue with my power supply, but I have a SeaSonic X750 which is more than capable of running a HD 6850. Do you guys think this is an issue with my card, or an issue with the drivers?
Edit: Forgot to add that I'm also running stock voltages on my card.

I think my brother is having similar issues in BF3 with the 6850

Actually, I've been getting something similar in BF3 where my game freezes and then crashes to desktop. The tray icon will still be open, but when you click it, nothing happens.

Is it fixable without affecting the performance or isn't, since, they knew very well. It's not that they suddenly discovered the bug out of nowhere. Let's wait for the next whql... As they said, they're working on it ( supposedly beta 11 had the fix ).

The question is how much differs Win7, Win8 and how looks WHQL certification after release of Win8. As some people maybe noticed, problem became more visible after W8 release.

Okay, just had the same thing happen again, but this time my GPU was only at 68 degrees.
When my screen unfreezes, MSI Afterbuner's OSD reports that my GPU temps have dropped (to mid-60's).

EDIT: Okay, it just happened again but at 66 degrees this time, so I think GPU temperatures can be ruled out of the problem. Will try installing Beta 8 instead of 11 in a bit.

Edit: Okay, after another freeze, I was able to catch a message saying that the AMD display driver has crashed and has recovered. This is starting to sound like an overclocking problem to me as opposed to a driver issue. However, I've had my card running these same drivers and overclock settings for at least 2 weeks now without issues. Why would my card start acting up all of a sudden if I haven't changed anything?

Using MSAA in game by chance?

Nope, no MSAA nor' FXAA in BF3.

After lowering my overclock from 975mhz core to 965 mhz core, the freezing stopped happening in Portal 2. Haven't played BF3 since the change though. This seems very likely that I'm pushing my card too hard. It still seems weird however; why would my card start acting up all of a sudden, when I've been playing the same games at the same settings, with the same drivers, for weeks?

Guess it is possible...I ran the beta drivers for a few weeks and had no issues with BF3 other than a few missing textures but sometimes that can be a server issue.

NVIDIA Fanboi - We see this term used online all the time and we know what it means.
But when you ask any of them why they are a Nvidia fanboi, the answer is always the same.
"I tried AMD , but their drivers were terrible"

It is AMD themselves that create Nvidia fanboi's with their horrible driver support.
And in 2012, with AMD having such great hardware, great price-point and excellent "never settle" promotion, they had an opprotunity to turn t around.
Instead I'm afraid they're just making more Nvidia fanboi's than ever and its only hurting AMD in the long run.

Far Cry 3 - Ths is an AMD gaming evolved title, where even the AMD rep on here tell us AMD worked really hard on.
Yet when you install the FC3 performance driver, you get flickering/flashing errors in FC3 and other games with that same performance driver.

X-fire in FC3 is plain and simple broken.
The AMD rep on here stated you get near perfect x-fire scaling in Far Cry 3.
That is a flat out LIE!
He must have forgotten that some people actually do own the hardware and know it is a lie.
Just click on the following link and actually READ what is said, don't just look at the pretty colors and numbers on the chart.
LINK
Notice how they mention despite the FPS that x-fire is unplayable.
Sure you can fix it with a frame limiter and trying 60,59,58,57,56,55,54.......etc...etc.. going lower and lower until you achieve smooth gameplay.
But by the time you set the frame limit low enough to where the game plays smooth, you realized you're better off playing the game on one card.
And all of us who own 7xxx series cards in x-fire know this is true.

Now remember, this is an AMD Gaming Evolved Title, that AMD supposedly worked very closely with the developer to ensure great drivers at launch!!

Sure they will fix it EVENTUALLY, as usual.
But as usual, most people will be done with the game and moved on by then.

Look at your CPU - This is an AMD thread, but count how many gamers on here alone use Intel cpu's vs AMD cpu's.
There are WAY more people using Intel cpu's.
The reason more consumers use Intel Cpu's is because they are simply better.
A customer will only support your product up to a point.
Once the customer feels that he is only screwing himself by buying your product, he will no longer buy your product and will buy the competitors
product instead.

Supporting AMD. (now and in the future)
We can only do a small part to support AMD by buying their hardware.
But when it comes to drivers, its only AMD who can help themselves.

But unfortunately it looks like again this year, it is AMD who is their own worst enemy with poor drivers.
(its not Nvidia, its not Intel, its AMD who is AMD's worst enemy)
And a new Nvidia Fanboi is born with every driver glitch, because as mentioned above, a customer is NOT going to intentionally keep screwing himself!

It is the AMD GPU driver team who need to decide if they care about their company's survival enough to do what it takes to turn things around.

2012, should have been AMD's best year. (for its GPU devision)
In 2012 AMD had better hardware, better price, better promotion , yet Nvidia still competes easily for one simple reason.... Better driver support...period.
So what does AMD do?.. they release a quick FC3 performance driver with bugs for the holidays and go on vacation while leaving the customers hang with the bugs/glitches.
They might have great sales in 2012 due to hardware/price/promotion, but in the long run, its going to backfire and force many more gamers to Nvidia because the drivers 'simply work like they should".

A smart company adjusts its schedule to meet its customers needs, because they know, without customers, that company will no longer exist.
And if you don't do it, your competitor will do it to meet the customers needs, and they will no longer be your customers.

AMD simply cannot afford to keep repeating the same mistakes year after year and expecting different results!

I'm afraid, it is not going to be long before seeing an AMD GPU in a gamers rig is just as rare as seeing an AMD CPU in a gamers rig today.
And worse yet, not long after that AMD may no longer exist.

So those of you who are new to AMD, keep believing this will get better, those of us who have supported AMD all along can tell you....
"NOPE, AMD does this same crap every year.", "But don't worry, they will eventually fix your favorite game's bugs, it will just be long after you finished the game and started a new game with new bugs to be fixed".

So be sure to report your driver bugs just in case AMD does care enough about its company's long-term livelihood enough to do something to turn it around.
We showed our support by buying the hardware.
But It is their choice whether they want show support for their own company, by focusing on better driver support.

Lying to them and telling them they are doing a great job while repeating the same mistakes year after year, is going to do nothing but ensure that AMD's GPU division is about as well respected as its CPU division. (which is not at all)

I was having a similar issue but what I noticed was my voltage was getting reset. I'd have afterburner open and was gaming no problem. My voltage was set to 1212. Everything was fine and I happen to look over (2nd monitor) and notice out the blue my voltage was back to default 1168(something around there). I let it ride for a while just to see and sure enough it crashed. Don't know why but it seems sometimes CCC wants control back and overrides the voltage setting but leaves everything else intact. For my overclock without voltage the card wont stay up long. I'm thinking of removing CCC altogether or finding some way to get it to stay out the way of Afterburner. As long as my voltage stay I can game till my fingers fall off no problem.
