It's a known bug, we're working on it. Revert to your previous stable driver to avoid this bug for now.
The easiest answer I have to all the "so, what about this bug?!" posts is this:

1) Please report the bug to www.amd.com/report. The more you report, the more you help me get bugs fixed. Bug fixes have to be addressed in some order of priority, so volume is one of the factors raises priority. smile.gif

2) I am not a driver engineer, nor am I in the software team. I don't have a direct line of communication to them, so I am only capable of relaying what's on my radar. That generally does not include every game, or edge-case errors in lesser-known or more obscure software packages. I'm just not privy to that level of detail.

3) I always make sure the bugs you guys report get submitted by email to the right people, too, so please keep posting. Even if I can't promise an ETA or comment on the status, making me aware does help.

But it's not enough to simply report that you're having a problem, I need a "repro" scenario. I need you to tell me the exact system and conditions required to reproduce the experience you are having, so we can recreate it in our labs. Specific driver revisions, video BIOS versions, motherboard BIOS versions, how you launch the software with the issue, what version, etc. Specific detail goes a LONG WAY.

In a nutshell though, starting with 12.10 and later, AMD GPU's are limited to only 35-45% usage in Folding@Home. A manual install of the APP SDK 2.7 is required to get it to work.

Here's the thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1323729/amd-gpu-folding-on-12-11-beta-drivers

i.e. I can reproduce it with a page like this (no flash player or animations or images, just simple text, and I can arrive to 3d clocks easily just scrolling up and down !!).
This is a lack of cooperation between Firefox and Amd teams.
Nvidia released a fix for a similar issue in September 2011.
So I wonder, why not AMD?

1) I reported my issue to that URL for 12.10 and 12.11 beta weeks ago.

2) Ok!

3) Ok!
My hardware specs:

Video card: ATI HD5850 Sapphire 1GB Toxic GDDR5 2xDVI/HDMI/DP
BIOS version 012.020.000.003.000000
BIOS date 04/12/10 04:22
Name in code: GPU Cypress Pro

INTEL Core i7 860 2.8Ghz 8MB
ASUS 1156 P7P55D-E Deluxe (BIOS DATE: 11/23/09 16:50:29 VER: 08.00.15 )
DDR3 1600Mhz PC12800 4GB G.Skill ECO CL8

My software specs:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0
Win 7 Ultimate x64
Catalyst 11.12 drivers, but I can reproduce it also with Catalyst 12.4, Catalyst 12.8, Catalyst 12.11 beta 6.

I can reproduce it in two ways (read spoiler):
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Method 1 (always reproducible):
1. Start Firefox 16.0.2 (with HW accel.)
2. Start GPU-z
3. Navigate to any long page in Firefox (i.e. http://forums.anandtech.com/archive/index.php/t-2258925.html), scroll up/down until you finish the page.
4. Observe GPU clocks in GPU-z.
5. GPU clocks up to its maximum speed

Method 2 (I don't know if it's related to the scrolling issue) :
1. Start Firefox 16.0.2 (with HW accel.)
2. Start GPU-z
3. Focus on a page in Firefox without scrolling (i.e. http://forums.anandtech.com/archive/index.php/t-2258925.html), and almost immediately click on the GPU-z window reduced in taskbar to observe GPU clocks. You have to do this continually to notice the clock increase.
4. Observe GPU clocks in GPU-z
5. GPU clocks up.

In the same hardware/software specs, Chrome 22-23 and IE9 don't reach 3d clocks, but at maximum 2d clocks in some moments. So they aren't affected by this issue.

This is the official reply of a firefox engineer (extrapolated from the previous link):

Only driver developers can really know what triggers that mode, and they are also best placed to do something about it.
