Not bad at all for the price. Do you know anything about the battery life on it?

I'm hoping that the ghz on that i7 isn't too low for d
Gaming tho. I have never oc'd a laptop and don't think I would though.
BTW my other brother gave me a 120 gb ocz vertex 3 that was broke and i factory rma for a brand new one free!
Bottom line final specs and price for bro's first gaming laptop:
290 for barebones kit
30 ram
120 for chip
$0 for ssd
=$440
Not TOO bad for
15 inch new laptop
I7-2630qm @2.0-2.7
8gb Gskill ram
OCZ Vertex 3 120gb sata III SSD
Nvidia Gt 540m
Now this thing better at least play the games for at least
the next two years lol Haha prob not tho

the i7 will never bottle neck that GT540m, it will almost always be its limiting factor... You probably could have just gotten a dual core i5 or i3, but the quad will last quite a while.

That's one heck of a bargain! Great job piecing it together. Where did you get that barebone for $290?

Next two years? Uh... probably not... But it'll last as long as your kid needs it to so long as he doesn't try anything funny. tongue.gif

The 540M should be treated much like a 9600GT.

My apologies, as i am the one asking the questions after all,but i was under the distinct impression (thats why i bought this) that the 540 2gb was close to the Gt 630m? Is this not true?

I did some reading here, but i dont know this to be a good source or not.. but this would place this GPU between a 630m and a 650m which should be middle of the road graphics (in gamers terms)

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

i guess the only question left, that i should really be asking is: If you were to recieve this laptop for free, and it were your first gaming laptop-ish, how would you feel?

p.s. i do realize tho, that the 2gb on this is a complete sales gimmick as it doesnt use even a whole 1 gb

The GT 630M is a rebranded GT 540M. There's no difference between the GPUs as a whole.

The GT 540M is considerably slower than the GT 640M, which is based on Kepler, and in a completely different class from the GT 650M, which decimates the Fermi-based GPU.

If I'd gotten the laptop for free, and it was my first gaming laptop, with the knowledge I have at the moment I'd be modestly underwhelmed. tongue.gif To someone who doesn't know about laptops and their respective parts, it's still capable of a few feats. The GPU isn't terrible but it's definitely aged enough to be a bit of a turnoff for me. I wouldn't go for anything lower than the 640M at the dead minimum, but again, that's just me.

As for the 2GB framebuffer, I wouldn't even scoff at it. It's kinda pathetic that they'd spend any more money on that chip for any reason. The GT 640M LE, which is a slower version of the standard 640M, is a considerably more potent chip and much more cost effective than the older Fermi counterpart. I wouldn't go for a 2GB GT 540M even if the option presented itself to me free of charge.

well this is coming from a HD 7970 user so i wouldn't really blame you for hating on the low end cards. To be honest, i just got a laptop with i7 3610qm and gt 630m and it can run nearly all the games on 1366 x 768 resolution with med-high gfx and no AA so i guess it is doing just fine for now....

i would of gone for the Dell vostro 3550 -

I picked it up for £314.58 with an i5 and a 1.5gb 6630m 8 gbs of ram, and a 1600x900 screen

From hot uk deals tongue.gif

and i play crysis 2 on it at 1366x768 with some crazy settings

It should run D3 just fine, trust me, I'm currently running it on a system that doesn't even meet min reqs (my mobo died, is in rma, using wifes pc) on a Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5ghz, 6 gig ram, and a GeForce G210. Granted I have to run it with everything turned off/low and at 12something X 7something res, it do run.

And as Glidin said reference it as a GT 630m. at 1366x768 medium it nets about 52 fps it looks like.
