UPDATE #2

purchased another barebones i found DIRT CHEAP 399 for 1080p msi gt 660m kit for only 100$ more...im either returning or selling the other one..Anyone want the original one i was talking about?

Also i have a dilemma now.. i have a 2630qm ordered for this laptop but the specs say it takes ivy not sandy.... i called msi and they arent sure if a sandy will work in this mobo that supports ivy...anyone know?

the new kit i got is the MSI MS-16GA (937-16GA22-009) for 399$

Well, the 2630qm is 45w tdp... which is the max that notebook supports. And the majority of the IVY Bridge notebooks from clevo, msi, etc... have had options to put in a sandy bridge CPU on websites like xoticpc in the past. I don't see why it wouldn't work, unless the bios doesn't support them... Also, that is a great price for a barebone of that spec. that is awesome!

The MSI one you found is considerably better for the money. The 660M is pretty impressive for being only a 43w GPU. smile.gif

It'll do Diablo 3 very nicely.

Also, I used to use a Toshiba Qosmio X505 machine with a GTX 460M. So I know what the lower end GPUs offer. I was there at one point myself.

The Desktop variants Are...

The mobile Ivy Bridge is FCPGA988 and so is the sandy bridge, I would say hes going to be ok. Also, Dove, thanks for sharing that site, wish I needed a rig... they have some solid pricing.

Yeah i didn't know the specific name for the mobile one but yeah what i meant was that they both run on the same chip...

No, that's not how it works. The Ivy Bridge chipset can support either, but the Sandy Bridge chipset cannot identify the Ivy CPUs. You need to know what chipset you have before you go and drop a CPU into a laptop.

Back when the Socket LGA 775 was released, it was in use with Pentium 4 CPUs. When the Core 2 Duo line was released, the sockets that used those P4s weren't correctly tuned to allow for the usage of a Core 2 Duo, voltages and all that weren't correctly supported by the chipset. It's not uncommon for this to take place. tongue.gif

Yes I realize my error now... but we all understood what I meant.. that there is quite a bit of compatibility between ivy and sandy. The chipsets that support them ,to be precise. I guess for the price sandy bridge i7 mobile go for now (110 I got mine for) if I got the wrong chipset i7 (besides 1st Gen) I don't mind having an extra around as a spare... I could care less if I "throw" it in there and it doesn't work.

Moreover, I've done quite a few CPU upgrades lately for cheap friends and associates and knowing what chipset the CPU was did nothing for me. I was able to iinstall cpus of other chipsets and had them work just fine.. apart from obvious differences, I don't base my picking a CPU solely on chipset. A lot of times its hard to find chipset then to Google and find a compatible CPU.....

As far as the 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen Intel core, its fairly well known that quite a few are interchangeable, minus all the details...

I need help PLEASE... so I got the compal running but can't seem to get audio working. Not used to a completey. "From scratch" build,I usually use driver genius or go to the website for drivers.... even the driver on the cd for this doesn't work ....
What am I missing?
