Just Purchased Barebone Gaming Laptop for Brother,Im not a gamer, but need this thing to play... - Page 4

Anyways, I got the pbl21 all set up For my brother in law to take this weekend and have a few last questions about tweaking it..

Through nvidias software i was able to get it to 1920x1080 resolution
I had my son test it out with the only pc game he plays, minecraft.with nvidia's graphics set on overclocked everything to the max, the lowest we were able to get the fps to on minecraft was 65..

My brother in law that will be taking this doesnt really mess with settings much, nor does he overclock...

So my questions are:
Is it a bad idea letting him take this with the graphics all clocked to max?

Should i turn down to 1080p to the 1366 res it seem to prefer?

And finally,i only was able to afford the lower clocked i72630, can i/should i overclock the processor? As this rig says it can take the higher ones up to 3.5ghz etc etc?

I would not give an overclocked gpu in a desktop to someone who is computer savvy, let alone in a laptop... BAD idea. Also I assume and hope you didn't just drag the slider all the way to the right and letter rip, good way to kill a card! I would't leave it overclocked...

Leave the res at 1080p

and The cpu has built in turbomode for the cores, and does not have an unlocked multiplier, so no overclocking is available on it.

yeah, maybe i did? biggrin.gif should i put it back to default? im worried that this card will be lame though.cant i clock it a little higher?

Leave the res at 1080p thumb.gif this is easy enough,BUT wont he get less performance form the GPU at this high res?

i guess i just underestimate an overclock using software.... i dont game, and i overclock all my stuff through bios, and assumed that they wouldnt let me oc something over the recommended ranges etc etc

but when the GPU burns out.i'll be mad i just "assumed" like a jacktool.

Yeah I would back it off, I am amazed it didnt artifact or crash

As for the res, 1366x768 would look like crap on a screen with a native resolution of 1920x1080. Yeah hell lose some performance, But i would prefer to game at lower settings on native res than higher at lower res. Personally...

I assumed that it did have a native res of 1920x1080 as well..

but the strange thing was, windows wasnt giving me the option of 1920x1080..Knowing that they stated it was 1080p, i searched for a way to get it to that, and the only way it would let me was through the Nvidia settings....

the strangest part tho is everything looks odd as hell when on 1920x1080. Seriously.. fonts, and even some of the desktop background looks washed out.. But when it was how it came factory,@ 1366 or whatev,it didnt look weird...

maybe i shoudl be more speciffic. lets ASSUME it looks the SAME (hypothetically) on both settings, tho it obviously wouldnt.

Would you get more performance on a lower setting or no? and many thanks for your help,im repping you asap... i have no clue about this stuff... i dont game

something isn't right with the res. change it back. it will also give you better performance than higher res but wil be more cpu bound.

verify what the specs are and what the sellers website says. that site has been labeled sketchy by some users who bought gpus from there. it's in the online deals thread.

I had a nice long post written out but lost it sure to a stupid notification on my phone. sorry about any grammar or spelling errors. I'll check back later.

hey many thanks for the help!

he took it this weekend and is absolutely dumbfounded that a computer could actually be this fast... he says d3 is sooo smooth...

i backed off on the nvidia settings a bit,but forgot to lower the 1080p res.

i guess all is well... he hasnt mentioned anything of artifacts etc etc yet so...

his friend wants one now but is adamant that he wants it to be pricisely equal or greater than his... i see this one below at ebay, but am worried about the gpu.. i see that there is a "le" model of the 640 which has a much lower clock... do you have an idea of which gpu this one has, speciffically? i emailed with no response yet...
