Strict and reasonable are two separate things. As long as a court is both, I'm fine with it. In this case it seems like reason wasn't part of the judgement, unless there are some facts we haven't been made aware of yet.

I don't know much about the Chinese legal system, but if I can go to prison for 6 years for failing to predict the unpredictable, I'd almost rather take my chances (albeit blindly) in the Chinese courts...

*sigh* at all the political back and forth... I would agree with an earlier comment that it's just human nature from those in an assumed 'alpha' position. Blame someone so they don't look at you... lynch mobs are better pointed at other people than those in charge.

As for the actual jailling of scientists for their opinions... not at all uncommon and there have been other stories lately and over the years about this same type of thing. One scientist was charged with being an accomplice after submitting her findings about drug content in poppy shipments... she disagreed that the source shipments qualified as drug trade since there was beyond minimal traces, so they said 'fine... but there ARE traces (impossible to eliminate btw), so you're lying and in cahoots... so jail for you too!"...

America has a bad rap due to excessive media reporting sensationalist tendancies... we're just as bad as everyone else in different ways.

The conviction rate in China is extremely high (U.S. data on the subject puts it at 99.88 percent!), if you're even going to be in court there, you're pretty much already guilty.

maybe those scientists promised or guaranteed something that can't be predictable. the scientists who signed the contracts will be held accountable according to the wording used.

this happens to doctors quite often and why malpractice insurance is mandatory. a doctor will slip out something like "yes, she will get better with time. guaranteed." to the patient's relatives. that patient then dies a day later from complications during something simple as a splenectomy. that doctor is then liable for promising something that's impossible to predict.

so nope, i don't feel bad about this.

Absurd, earthquake is unpredictable. Italian government act like seismic engineering is an easy stuff.
Rather than throwing innocent scientist to jail, they should identify what building has been collapsed, and throw the consultant or contractor - who build a building that do not obey the building code - to jail instead.

I wouldn't surprise if the already rare seismic engineer become even rarer in that country.
