I can def see why an ENTIRE site dedicated to such a topic does exist and prosper.

I guess.

I liked Geekhack better when it was about keyboards.

I have gotten that comment from a LOT of the oldtimers and vendors.

I post at least as much on GH as I do here, and still don't really "get" the whole novelty keycap thing.

I mean, for one, if you type properly, you aren't even looking at your keyboard, so the look of keys really doesn't matter that much. Plus, at least IMO, adding novelty caps never actually improves the look of the keyboard...in fact, they almost always make it completely un-presentable.

Wanting different keycaps because they feel better, I can understand. Wanting different keycaps because they'll last longer, I can also understand. But if you offered me the chance of even half a millisecond's faster response (without the usual corresponding increase in the chance of erroneous keypresses) in exchange for never being able to use custom keycap sets ever, I'd take it and never look back. Unfortunately, now that the "custom keyboard" scene has so solidly focused itself on the aesthetics/keycaps side of things, the chances that anyone will come out with the sort of top-end keyboard I'd be interested in seem quite low...

Aesthetics and usage is all when it comes to keyboards. Keyswitch type is not that much of a deal, but these Click Clacks are indeed a specialty to keyboard enthusiasts. Essentially, keyboard swag. Or bling.

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/forum.php?s=5eb01a5b8ba27e73c44bdb6516c9b608

It's a forum dedicated to flashlight enthusiasts.

This, in my opinion, is proof that no matter how weird, useless, or frivolous your hobby is, there are thousands of other people on this planet sharing it with you.

Kind of soothing, really. To know that we aren't alone out here with our weirdness. That when we try to explain to our friends why we spent $200 on a power supply, they look at us funny. But when we mention it here on OCN, a few guys say "Wow, nice! I was thinking of getting one." and ask questions.

Haha, I actually found that forum while doing some research on anodizing*. There are entire threads there dedicated to the benefits of different color anodizing on tubes and the heat difference between standard aluminum tubes and black anodized tubes. I don't get the keycap obsession, but hey, whatever floats your boat. There's always something someone out there finds interesting, so who are we to speak ill of their hobby or interests as long as they're not hurting anyone.

*I'm trying to figure out if it's actually possible to anodize a heatsink or if there will be problems introduced by the fact that they're mixed metal.

Due to mass production of most things, people will inherently find ways to individualize themselves or become more unique.
Same reason as why most people dont like seeing some wearing the same clothes as they are wearing. Even at this age, we are already seeing numbers added to our nick/login names, how about the future?

Custom/limited stuff will only continue to increase in their individuality/uniqueness "value" that people give them.
