Wifi doesn't work on my laptop running ubuntu 12.04

post #1 of 22
Thread Starter
So A cool guy on OCN named fir3chi3f gave me a hard drive for my laptop so I decided to wipe the old one and install ubuntu on it.

Long story short, I can't figure out how to get the wifi to connect. Wired works fine and wifi worked when I was running windows xp. I just assume the issue is because of some drivers that the old hard drive had.

This is the first time I have used ubuntu so any advice helps.

The issue is likely the drivers aren't installed for the WIFI module or its not a support module - if you can find out which model of wifi adapter you have (what chipset) you can likely find the drivers for it wink.gif

There's your card, and Ubuntu should have prompted you to install the proprietary drivers after install ( usually ). You should be able to click on " Additional Drivers " under the Unity menu and it should show you there is extra hardware drivers to install.

If not you can try (from the terminal);

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer

Hmm, well something else I see from my google-fu is this command:
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source

Reboot and see if it works. If it doesn't, then give this one a go:
Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

Should probably remove some of the stuff that hasn't been helping, I wouldn't until we get it working tongue.gif

In the terminal type " lspci -v " and post the output, it will tell if the wireless card is using the driver module.

like;
Quote:

Subsystem: Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
