Looking for input on my Intel build

Thread Starter
pretty much going for something that i can use for quite a while without having to do major overhaul (vid card every couple years, etc). i'm just worried about compatibility for my parts, since i've never done a build this "big" and costly before (my current rig cost ~$350 after rebates) and i'd rather not screw this up biggrin.gif.

i've done the research, and what little bad reviews i could find on the stuff (mostly the mobo) are pretty much all linux-centric issues, which i don't have to worry about.

i've also never build an intel machine (AMD being cheaper and whatnot), so i'm not 100% sure if there's anything special i should be looking for.

Well than you should get a Z77 motherboard and a 3570k CPU
You can always keep your GPU for the time being because you are gaming in 1080p 60hz. However if you want to upgrade I would not get a 2nd 460, but I would get either a 670 or a 7950. Well heck even at your resolution a 660ti could also be a nice business.
Get an SSD. At least a 60 GB ssd for boot only. They are not that expensive.
You can keep your mouse and keyboard and the PSU.
If you will be doing OCing on the CPU get a Corsair H80 liquid cooler. No need for Corsair H100.
What kind of a monitor do you have? How is the vision quality? Remember, people undermind the importance of monitors and that's wrong.
IF you can, grab a Korean 1440p display for like $350. So many people including myself love it. However for 1440p, I would recommend you to get either a 7950, 7970, 670 or a 680. AMD could be a smarter purchase if what you only care about is getting more FPS at a better budget.

where? i can only seem to find ones that are $650+ including shipping, most seem to be ~$1k.

alrighty, the i7 looked better on paper, which is why i had it. would this and this be better options?

can't find a link for my current monitor atm, but it's an 24" LG 1080p LCD monitor that's worked quite well for the past 2 years. going to add a 2nd one (perhaps with a 1440p if i can find one that's not too expensive).

after rereading your post a few times, i think you may have missed my edit adding in the link.

1-)Here is a link to one of the monitors

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Tempered-Glass-27-Yamakasi-Catleap-2703-LED-IPS-2560x1440-WQHD-Monitor-/150853378334?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_Monitors&hash=item231f8fe11e

It is the monitor I have. Remember the cheaper ones and the expensive ones all have the same visual quality but what they differ with is that the one I sent you only have a DUAL DVI input. Thats it. NO HDMI, no anything else. Hence the reason for being cheap. Go to the club in my signature. So many people are using these monitors and the results are AMAZING.

2-) You can get a 3770k too if you can afford it but in gaming purposes the difference between 3770k and 3570k are minimal. If you are going to be doing video editing and stuff like that than maybe 3770k can be a better option because of hyperthreading. About the motherboard what you send is good but a bit expensive. I have a Asus Sabertooth Z77 and I am very happy with it. Ask around the Asus Z77 Sabertooth Club if you have questions. Ignore the latest bios problems though.

3-) yeah I missed that link.

Hmm so you are aiming for 7950. Thats good.

16gb of RAM is nice, but you can always get 1 8gb first than add 2nd one later. You will be perfectly fine with 8GB of ram as well.

Great job on the SSD. Those Samsung SSDs are very vry nice.

Again H100 is a great CPU cooler but I upgraded from a H80 and it never justified the price difference, but if you want to go for the h100 go for it. I have a Corsair 800D and I was using the Corsair H80 radiator on the rear, but the Corsair h100 radiator is bigger so I can only place it on top of the case. I have enough room for 3 fans on the top but because of the H100's big radiator I can not take advantage of the 3rd spot for the fan. Again for me h80 was a better option overall.

You might not have to upgrade your PSU just yet. Not with the 1 GPU you have anyways. I believe you can still keep your 650W one.

About the soundcard, creative is coming up with a new soundcard this month. Sound Blaster Z. Wait for some reviews. It might be a nice purchase too.

You have to get them on eBay. The Yamasaki Catleap is one, but there are others.

You've picked out a very expensive motherboard for what you likely need. You'd be better off with the P8Z77-V (or even the P8Z77-V LK) if you want Asus.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131837

Also, unless you plan on going SLI, you can get by with a quality 550W or 650W power supply. Something like the Rosewill Capstone 550W modular is nice, or the Corsair HX650.

And unless you plan to push for the very top overclocks, no need to pay $100+ for the H100. You can do very nice moderate (~4.4-4.6) overclocks on the $30 CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ EVO.

Oh well if you will do video editing than look into i7 for sure. I never do video editing myself, only do gaming but people who are into video editing always recommends the i7 because of hyperthreading.

You will have a very nice rig.

Also Forceman's motherboard suggestions are very nice and budget friendly too. Could be better than the Sabertooth Z77 for you. there are so many other Z77 motherboards you can also look into but honestly for your uses do not pay over $250 for the motherboard. Anything less than $200 will be just fine. Just make sure it is a Z77 motherboard though.

The machine proposed has a 2011 socket CPU and an 1155 socket motherboard.

That's a no-go
