X2 555 Unlocked to X4 vs X4 965 BE

Hey Guys!

Currently I have a X2 555 (BE) unlocked to X4 running at 3.9Ghz stable.
I have a Asus GTX 660 Ti and running Bf3 smooth (90% of the time) at Ultra settings. Sometimes I have dips towards 45 Fps...

I want to upgrade my system a bit and I have the opportunity to buy a X4 965 BE. I have a 965 cooler on my 555 now, so I can reuse this on the new processor.
I have experience with overclocking as you might have noticed and I want to push the 965 and motherboard as far at is can go.

Based on this thread (http://en.inpai.com.cn/doc/enshowcont.asp?id=7986&pageid=8147) there is no performance increase between X4 or X6.

My motherboard is a M4A77T.

My question is; will a OC 965 increase the overall performance in BF3 compared to my unlocked x2 running at 3.9 Ghz.

Thanks guys!

Maarten

The FPS dips Are probably protective throttling because you don't have VRM cooling.

just save up for piledriver or steamroller. although, in multiplayer a six core kinda helps in minimum fps.

here is a quick comparison using my amd rig (work rig) . . .

res is at 1440 x 900, so not sure if it will apply to your case. the gpu is at stock.

Well the dips are most of the time happening during big map games and moving from one area to another and suddenly have to load allot of new map data. Like walking over a hill... Maybe it's because of my HD? Because, after a few seconds, the fps goes to 55/60 fps again.

I have a samsung spinpoint f3 1tb 7200, could a SSD be a fix to the dips??

Sorry I'm not sure what you mean exactly, is the piledriver/steamroller sarcasm? smile.gif

Maybe you're right about the X6 cpu's in multiplayer. I think the benchmarks are based on some singleplayer game... To ensure a valid benchmark comparison. Although multiplayer demands allot more 'power'

your callisto is behaving exactly like a deneb rightnow, so it would not help to get a 965 even if you oc it to 4.2GHz, which would be possible with a better cooler but, like xd said, your mobo may not be up for it.

the figures in the screenie were based on single player campaign.

Should read up on the VRM cooling with the link in my sig. Your motherboard VRMs (4+1 phase, no heatsinks) may be overloading to the point where they cannot safely supply your 125W TDP overclocked x4, throttling itself during high CPU loads and reducing your performance temporarily while temperatures recoup.

I'm sorry, I can't find any link to VRM cooling in your sig.
However; I found this thread: http://www.overclock.net/a/about-vrms-mosfets-motherboard-safety-with-high-tdp-processors

It made me think and I'm really happy I now found that thread. Someone posted a comment there using the same mobo and a similar configuration. He uses http://www.frozencpu.com/products/7190/vid-105/Enzotech_MOS-C1_MOSFET_Heatsinks_-_10_Pack.html to cool the VRM. Will this be 'sufficient' or do I need an extra cooler just to be sure... (or do I need a better mobo?)

Thanks!

your mobo is fine. add those heatsinks and a fan to blow over them. it might help you reach a higher oc.

btw, if you buying fron frozen use coupon code - pcapex. you might get a 5% discount. also see if you can get the same cheaper in another place like Petra's shop. Google it.

Thanks for your advice!

Right now I have 2 fans in my case, one blowing air in from the HD and 1 at the back blowing it out.
Is this sufficient for the heatsinks or do I need an extra fan at the top-plate of the case? And which position would be the best, 1 or 2?

Or does it need a fan blowing directly at the VRM? If so, which type? And how can they be fitted?

I upgraded an unlockable 720BE to a 940BE and the extra core made a heap of difference in BF3. Your case, however, I don't think it would be worth it unless you can purchase the new chip and sell yours for almost no outlay. What %age is your GPU and CPU running at while gaming?

Your HDD/SSD wouldn't make a difference in FPS - maybe in loading times so you can get to a vehicle faster. I have BF3 loaded on my HDD, not SSD, and BF3 runs fine. It does also slow down to 45 fps or so on 64 player maps when loads of stuff is happening. How much RAM do you have?
