I want Audio Technica AD700, but willing to spend more, what should I get?

So my target headphones are the Audio Technica AD700...everybody on this forum praise it so much for gaming....and the fact that its open is a plus, keeps my head cool. Now, I'm willing to spend more to get better headphones....I don't have an unlimited budget, but around $300 I can squeeze by....what should I look into? According to a few threads on OCN, they point me to the Beyerdynamic 880 or 990's....should i be looking into these or something else? My headphones will be paired with a Xonar Essence STX which has a headphone amp up to 600ohm impedance.

I will be mostly gaming first person shooters, RPG's, strategy....and probably 30% music & movies....Thanks in advanced!

Your pretty much on the right track bud, can't go wrong with any of your choices. You could also have a look @ the Ultrasones as well, recently bought the pro 550s & they're really perfect for all of your listening needs. I purchased mines with similar wants as you. I'm no audiophile eh but I've done my fair share of reading myself. I may get the 880/990 in the future due to their comfortable looking pads.

Alright cool...I guess I am on the right path....I just wanted to make sure biggrin.gif

Anyway what should I be shooting for? 880 or 990, and 250 ohm or 600 ohm versions? I read that 880's are more neutral and natural sounding....and the 990's are very bright and treble happy....I wonder how the 990's would fair in a primarily gaming environment, with 30% movies/music? The back of my mind tells me to just go 880's and play it safe....but at the same time, I'm feeling adventurous biggrin.gif
