Need suggestions on a file sharing or FTP server....

I have a my computer I could use that's in my rig sig on VM ware through wifi.

The reason I want to build this is for me to share file and access them over the net with friends I'm on multiple computers and my friend is in Portland Oregon who i share files with through instant message and we are sick of it.

I also would like to share files with my friend and have them be able to drop there files on my hard drive.

Freenas is good looking program but I don't like the setup process as people have had problems with NTFS imports, and I don't think you can access it externally.

I also have windows server 2008 r2 I think but don't know how to set it up for what I want.
do you know any other programs I could use?

also I'm going to buy 1tb+ hard drives to accommodate for proper storage size.

FreeNAS is easy to set up, but you wouldn't use it with NTFS, its easy to do shares, set up an FTP and access on a network internally - I have it mount as Drive Z on my desktop every time my desktop boots up, looks just like a local drive thumb.gif

Well you didn't mention file sizes but...couldn't you set up dropbox or google drive on your and your friend's PC? Then it'd just take dropping the file in and it would magically appear on the other PC(s). You can also share files via dropbox with that public folder. Unless you really, really want a server-based solution...?

You can also set up something like hamachi VPN on all the PCs and share that way...

Oh I get it, really really large files, gigabytes at a time... For the security I would still recommend setting up a VPN. Doesn't have to be hamachi, just some kind of virtual network thing so you can copy the files back and forth really easy. Keep in mind you'd still be limited by upload speeds no matter what...in fact depending on speeds it might be faster to to snail-mail an 8 gig DVD back and forth...rolleyes.gif

If I'm thinking correctly i can make a vpn on windows server 2008 r2. But we would just be shielded from spying eyes but still need a file sharing setup to use

You could use Server 2008 R2 to run as a FTP server, but FTP is too insecure to use over WAN...so I would use SFTP.

Better yet, I would look into building a cheap small PC with multiple NICs, and running Untangle as your firewall and set up an OpenVPN server (or even doing this in a VM or something), so you can connect back home via VPN, or your friends can connect via VPN, and just access your files as if they were at your house.

I'm also looking to do an SFTP server, one that a normal user would log into and not be prompted to enter in keys or anything, but still support encrypted file transfers. How could I go about doing that?
