Chromebooks

Ok so I have been looking at picking up one of the new Samsung 3 series Chrombooks. At $249 it will be a wonderful option for school work. Much more portable than my current laptop. I use my main laptop for gaming on the couch, however tranporting is not always fun. Plus the fear of dropping a $2000 laptop over a $249 dollar Chromebook is much more appealing. I understand that it is a purely internet based machine, however doing everything in the cloud actually is what is gearing me towards it.

Does anyone have any experience with some of the previous Chromebooks and how their performance is? Is it worth the $249 web only cloud exp over carring around my MX17??

they're a good deal, but i would go with a custom linux distro such as Jolicloud or Lubuntu over the chrome OS, my friend did a comparison, and even if it's a bit old, i still believe it is relevant

let me get this straight, chrome is at worst on par with is 9 but would have a slow chromium?they didn't put a proper CPU gpu in there?

I bought one and it's pretty fantastic. There are certainly slow downs here and there, but they go away after a few seconds. Usually loading a video makes it freak for a second.

I have a Samsung series 5 chromebook and it's one of the best electronics devices I've bought in a while. I have no problem with it being web only as I have wifi everywhere I go. You can also use google docs offline if you need to. It can be a little sluggish on HUGE documents but I generally don't have an issue. I have never really used it to watch videos or play games though. Boot only takes a few seconds and resume from sleep is instant.

I have tried making a linux distro to be exactly the same but you just can't make it with every bit of the same functionality. I tried installing chormium as well onto a regular netbook, but it is way to much work to get it running right if you can at all.

OK...So I finally received my Samsung Series 3 Chromebook today. So far so good...Everything is as it would be expected. Runs quick, boots up quick...extra 100 gig of storage google drive storage is really nice. It is a nice size and the keyboard is solid. I havent messed with to many aps for it yet...Still trying to get all the basics down. The only complaint that I have right now is local video playback. Video online via YouTube etc. works flawless and looks great. I tried to run a .avi HD file and it took 4-5 min to load and only played sound. After a Google search, this seems to be a common problem. Hopefully a fix comes through soon. But thats really a minor issue because I do not really see me running video files locally often just wanted to test it.

While it is made completely of plastic, it doesn't feel cheap at all. I am really excited to start the Spring semester. I am going to feel so much more comfortable carrying around a 250 dollar device as opposed to my $2000 Alienware laptop. I will report back if I run into any additional issues.
