I just can't seem to fit the fans under the rad for a push/pull config.
The first fan doesn't fit because of the mobo, the sabertooth z77. The other two fit easily.
Is it better to change the mobo because of the thermal armor to one without?
Will the height of the mobo with and without be much of a difference?
There's not enough space above the mobo in the 820 for more than a 45mm thick rad in P-P. About 70mm total
If you want to fit the GT-X up there in P-P, you'll need to do my DIVA mod like I did in my 630's builds to raise the rad up into the top space a little to make room for fans above the mobo.
You'll want to read thru the M 'n M Twins build log in my sig, but here's essentially what you'll need to do:
For the GT-X into an 820, use 3/8" threaded spacers and shim up if needed with #6 fender washers.
You'll need to remove a screw in the top plastics, and a small amount of dremelling in a couple places for fan clearance.
Here's the mobo side, with enough clearance for most mobos: Those are flat heads along the rear, not missing screws.
Here's a copy-paste of a post I made to help some one else wanting to do the same rad in an 820 complete with McMaster Carr part numbers.
The GT-X should do well with the 121's, and if you're patient and careful, you should be able to get it in the 820 with the Diva Mod.
Go with 3/8" threaded spacers: McMaster p/n 91115A660
and fender washers: p/n 91525A104
Screws: p/n 91735A154
Nuts: p/n 90715A007
Add additional washers under the rad mounting plate as required to get the fans to clear the mobo.
The Black Ice rads use 4mm hardware, so be sure to get mounting screws for the fans.
You can gain a tad more clearance by countersinking the screw holes in the fans and using flat head screws.
There's also 1 screw inside the top plastics that needs to be removed, and a screw boss and some other stuff that needs to be dremelled down. . . . .
But wait on the top mods until you have the rad and plate assembly fitted just above the mobo, so you only do as much as needed.
