...it also just occurred to me that if you had Frozencpu do custom sleeving on that harness, they might have forgotten to replace the SATA cable... and possibly pinned the molex incorrectly. blinksmiley.gif

So, I called FrozenCPU to discuss this earlier and I seem to be out of luck in terms of having RMA as an option, given they won't return anything that's signed for on delivery and apparently given NZXT won't accept a return off something customized by someone else, not unreasonably. So, I'm stuck with this case and fixing it. Ultimately I prefer that anyway. I like the case, bar this problem and the small crack. Plus my wife will likely kill me if I go buy a Temjim TJ09 or 11 and turn this into her new herb garden planter. smile.gif

RETELL:
Thanks for taking the time to reply - On the SATA cable, it's just not there, unless it's somehow wedged inside the custom sleeve I had FrozenCPU put on the cabling. It has a giant red sleeve on it and I guess it's possible it's inside there somewhere. I could cut it off, but ...(see below).
Beyond that, from your comment I guess maybe I'm not missing the PLED +/- cable after all?

I'm ultimately more concerned that on plugging the one molex cable in, the system won't even boot. It clicks once, the fans sometimes move a tiny fraction and then nothing. I've tried the molex plug with several different cables to different ports on my PSU and it always does the same. To my limited technical knowledge, this suggests a possible short (?) or other hardware issue with the plug/wiring. So, I can't get it to boot with just the fan controller on and no lighting and I can't follow your suggestions on adjusting the fan controller since it won't boot/isn't powered.

I can't get it to boot at all without bypassing the fan/light controller. All I have connected from that cable array is the Reset switch, Power switch and HD LED, to the mobo's system panel connector. The power and reset switches do work to turn the system on, off and reboot. The mobo also has onboard on/off and reset switches. The system boots perfectly with all other hardware installed and completes post test. I can get into BIOS 1 or 2 and all looks as it should, pending OS install.

SLIPPY:
Thanks hugely for the offer on the spare hue/fan controller. If all else fails here, I'll happily pay you whatever you think a fair price for it, if it proves to be my only option on fixing this thing.

Again, photos incoming this evening.

Hey it sounds like a bad wiring job out of the factory. Send me a PM with your shipping info and I'll get you new PCBs and cables. I'm sorry about all of this.

-Rob

No need to pay anyone for any spare parts, we'll take care of you. smile.gif

As Rob said, it may be an issue with the wiring from the manufacturing process, or, it could have been removed entirely during the sleeving process. Either way, it's not right and we don't want you living with a product that isn't what you paid for.

Ultimately, you can either PM Rob (Retell) or myself and we'll get you sorted out.

Here we go with pictures then ... and we'll see why I'm not a photographer by trade. In no particular order, below, with notes where they seem appropriate:

Case Damage:
Note: shows outer case with a dent to the back top left corner and then on the detachable top panel, a crack in the same place and the broken plastic pins - there were three broken pins and I have them to glue back on. One is glued back on and doesn't show here. Obviously, this is the opposite end of the case to the troublesome fan/light module.

Fan Control/lighting module PCB/close ups:
note: annotated a couple of shots to show the one empty socket/plug on the board. This is next to the 'POWER-LED' text and is shown in a few shots. Maybe this is the now-unused cable slot. Maybe it's a problem?

Cable sheath, including the Evil Molex Plug:
Note: this is the custom sheathed cable array. I had this sheathed at FrozenCPU before shipping. I guess the missing Sata cable could be in there but it seems unlikely. The rest of the cables are three-pin fan connectors for the fan controller, 3x USB 2.0 headers, card reader, HD Audio, 1x USB 3.0, Power, Reset and HD Led connectors, etc.

Rob and XNine,

thanks to you both for the follow-up here. I sent Rob a PM on this. Not sure if all those photos are any use now. smile.gif

Here's the problem!

That open connector you point out, is the one that is supposed to have the SATA power cable plugged into it!

FCPU forgot to put your SATA power cable back on after they sleeved it.

You do indeed have a later production 820, as there is not even a plug on the pcb where the PLED cable would plug into. (it would've be in the vacant space next to the SATA power connection)

No doubt Rob will get you a new one, but FCPU F'd up and owes you a sleeved one that you already paid for.

Kenny,

well, quite. I'm less than happy with the FrozenCPU service and will shop accordingly in the future. Thanks for the morale boosting post. biggrin.gif
