Well made NPC's on the other hand, with a bit of imagination, don't distract me like that at all, considering they're not real - but neither is the game itself. It's just an illusion so it all requires imagination to some degree. The I game to escape the daily routines (and people to some extent), not to be reminded of it. Sure you can always "Role play" on MMO's but tbh, i think thats just awkward and weird.

I remember being in a PUG in EQ2 and then these two guys started role playing they were jedi from starwars...in group chat. Awkward to say the least. What the hell do you say when some one starts talking about how good of a pediwan they are and such...I didn't understand most of what they said.
I am probably a little guilty of getting into a game too much lately...I've been playing an old PS2 game called Persona 3. Had a tear roll down my cheek when a person gave their life to save another one of the characters...used her life force to save the guy she loved...*sniff* It was beautiful *sniff*
I can get into a story if the story is good...something that doesn't happen much these days with newer games. As for the getting angry at a map not going your way...that will just happen. I tend to get up set when I have lots of a spawning to my death syndrome. I don't take it out on any one or anything but the opponents in the game though
