Dual Booting

So I'm going to be doing a dual boot of Linux (for media) and Windows (gaming) and interchange between the two for workplace applications. I'll be using the SSD for Windows 8 and the 750 GB drive for Linux. I've always had troubles with Linux in the past, always had troubles with drivers, or problems installing, etc., so I was wondering which version of Linux is the best supported while also being hassle free for media storage and use. I'm planning on using Linux for my audio and video usage, where I'll be using a creative HD USB sound card as my DAC/AMP with foobar. Will this work?

Also, silly question, DVD-R's can be used to burn iso's to disk right? Or used as back up disks too? Or do you need DVD-RWs? I don't want to use a usb/sd card for my iso's anymore.

You could test the USB sound card on a Live distro to see if it's supported out of the box. While a distro's popularity are not a direct indication of its level of support, it's still a rough indication. Any of the popular distros should do.

What would be the best media based linux distro to do? I was looking at ubuntu 12.10 but it isn't all appealing to me.
