Point of New Drivers on an Old Card

Thread Starter
Hey,

I'm STILL running SLI 8800GT 512mb. My question is, is there a point in updating my drivers after every release? I'm not playing any 'just released' games; the newest is Skyrim and Nvidia has had plenty of time to optimize it for older cards. Every driver release, their notes only apply to the new cards, and of course never mention the old cards.

Thanks! thumb.gif

I might have to disagreeI, I also have an older card and somtimes I do see speedups when getting the new drivers. Not sure how Nvidia does it but I also get the newest Catalyst control center every time they update that too, it usually comes with new features and tweaks.

Always a good idea to update. Even if it doesn't specifically say your card has been optimized just the code optimizations in the driver itself can increase performance. If you go back several versions and ran a benchmark, then came to the newest and did the same benchmark odds are you'll score slightly higher because it was optimized better even if it wasn't specifically for your card.

It only takes a few minutes any ways so might as well.

It can sometimes see improvements when the fixes are game specific but sometimes it can actually make it worse (i.e. Oblivion).

You know any specific case where Oblivion performance drops? It's one of the games I actually play.
