Two major resale sites reported eye-popping surges in business in the run-up to the iPad Mini launch. Some 140,000 devices were put up for sale on Gazelle.com Tuesday - a 700% spike from the day before, says Anthony Scarsella, chief gadget officer at the site. Half of that increase occurred in the hours just before the announcement, he says - and the most common model put up for sale was the "new iPad" released just six months ago. Another resale site, NextWorth.com , reported that trade-ins for iPads rose over 1,000% on Tuesday. (Nextworth declined to release actual numbers.) Gazelle and Nextworth are two of the biggest reselling portals, but industry experts say they represent only a small percentage of total trade-in traffic.

It's amazing how crazy people get when it comes to a new Apple Device. It's almost like the second coming...

There are a couple ways to interpret this:

1. All these people are going for the iPad mini because it fits their lifestyle better
2. Windows 8 tablets and the Surface release have people excited too

"Consumers can fetch up to $495 for an old iPad," Scarsella says. In other words, they can swap the used tablet for the mini and walk away with over $160.
Though this ^^^ seems more likely. It DOES, however, go to show that, intentionally or unintentionally, Apple products have a shockingly low lifespan because there's always something "new" coming out....

Saddest story ever told.

I feel the iPad Mini had a small part to play in this.

It's more about the 4th Gen iPad, 2x the CPU & GPU performance must have really annoyed a lot of "New iPad" owners. I know i would be after 6months! And that's only if you bought it upon release. Some people have only recently bought the "New iPad" and boom.....headshot!

For a slight bit of

I absolutely cannot STAND Apple's naming scheme. It's a "late 2009 macbook pro" with a "2.3ghz Intel".

Call it what it is. Give some model numbers and tell me what's inside there so I can actually do a fair comparison...

Back on topic: Who cares about the 4th gen iPad? What does the iPad 3 not do that the 4th gen will do?

Who cares about the 4th gen iPad? Everyone that owns a "New iPad"
What does the iPad 3 not do that the 4th gen will do? Everything faster

This is not just a small incremental update to the "New iPad" it's a big thing indeed. And it's like a kick in the nuts to a lot of people, and it's not hard to fathom why.

Seriously.

I'm not really happy with the iPad 4's launch though. There was absolutely no warning, no rumors, and "The New iPad" has been out for practically 6 months. They made a product obsolete far too quickly. My store made a 500 iPad order that we're now going to have eat because no one will want them now.

Indeed, it's certainly affecting more than just consumers, e-tailors are suffering too.

lol not a chance, people camp outside for 3days just to get their hands on a new Apple device, and if you ever saw how Apple store staff behave when letting folk into the store on a devices launch, it's like a religous cult......it's truly abnormal and disturbing.

I suppose. I'm not sure how much different that is to me than people spamming F5 on Newegg on release day for (insert product here). Maybe the physical aspect of waiting outside a store makes that somewhat more pathetic -- though I would not do any of that for any product, so perhaps it's just a case of me not understanding how lost we all are as consumers.

I "camped" NewEgg quite fervently a few months ago

Well apple get the best advertising coverage out of any other tech company out there.

after the mini was announced it made the front page of my local news paper and tons of online ones as well. Fact is apple has become so popular that they get a Ton of free advertising which makes them even more popular.

It's a cycle that they clearly benefit greatly from. If Samsung unveiled a new tablet it probably wouldn't make the news except on tech specific sites.

A quick refresh after the ipad 3 was expected.

Apple pushed out a power-hungry monster to power the new retina display. It wasn't really "apple" of them to throw caution to the wind there.

They may be leveraging their new internals with the A15-like performance but i really see this as a move to speed up adoption for the lightning connector.

Now their entire handheld line is on lightning except the shuffle (doesn't make sense to add it) and ipod classic (guess what's being discontinued next)

Highly likely, also i think the 4th Gen was thrown into the mix purely to diminish interest in the Microsoft Surface. The timing is just to a tee...

Yes, but the majority of people is not disturbed by it - the contrary, they feel cult being part of the cult
rolleyes.gif

And the trade ins are not returns. Doubt that the vast majority of Apple owners will switch to another platform - remember, most of them did not need what they got that much to begin with - most likely they had 1-2 laptops and a smartphone already: they just wanted to be part of the hype, the cult etc.

Apple (and every other company that would get away doing so) will capitalize on that the best they can.

Just yesterday after I learned of the new launch I put my two 64GB White 3rd gen iPads with cellular and a 64GB white iPhone 4S on ebay, sold all of them by this morning for $500 - $600 each.

There is defiantly a demand and why wouldn't I do it, if I can get that sort of cash back from my used iPad, why wouldn't i sell it and get the new one?

That's cool, but you'll be doing it again in 5months.

I think the point of this was to highlight the fanatical, hive-minded nature of many people who own iDevices.
Yes, much different than the guys I see here on OCN buying four new Nvidia GPUs every year for a 30% increase in computing power. God forbid someone wants to upgrade to a tablet that is twice as fast on both CPU and GPU as the one they had before. A tablet that costs as much or less than a single high-end GPU.

Hardcore computer enthusiasts are the last people that should be calling anyone fanatics for wanting the latest tech...

Well i suppose your right there, but i wouldn't want to keep having to sell devices pretty much straight after i unbox them.

Didn't they have a few studies that showed the part of the brain that's lit up when people think of religion does the same with apple people?

I agree with you about 99% of the time, but I'm not so sure about this one. Many people buy new Apple products because they're trendy, not because they need more speed. If I had to guess, a lot more of the hardware enthusiast base is going to take their time to research their products, and actually take advantage of the number-crunching power behind it. It's like Beats vs. Sennheiser.

Still, I don't see anything wrong with people dumping their iPad 3's for this. If I were drinking the Apple kool-aid, it's what I'd do.
