Pooled File Server with Redundancy: FlexRAID or unRAID? - Page 2

I use Flexraid with IIRC 14 drives currently. The only annoyance i have found was already mentioned where I have to setup the share each time I reboot, but since it remains on without reboots for long periods it's not a big deal. From every thing I have read there is no limit on the number of drives it can use, however I have been told that somewhere in the Flexraid forums it was recommended not to have more than 20 or so drives in one pool, not sure why and I have not tested it. My limit on drives is 20 anyways. I use it because W7 makes it easy to share with my other devices such as my Apple TV's with XBMC loaded on them. Streaming either across the wire or wireless makes no difference, although I have not tested BR ISO images much, but my MKV files have no issues and some of those are from BR ISO's. I am about to migrate to a new MB/CPU setup so we will see how well it handles that. Overall I have been happy with it, especially for the ease of use.

@kubd_zero that a really interesting problem not being able to get real-time raid recovery to work. That's not a good thing imo.I would submit a bug report on the forum(flexraid). I run x4 3TB's with one parity disk & a spare(not installed) just encase something happens or I need more space. I didn't have the need for real-time so like others I just use snapshot and sync it once a day.As for you question on Brahim's writings I have no idea, wasn't a feature I was interested in,but if you give a test run let up know how it goes.

@Boyboyd when you setup your shares did you do it through windows dashboard or flexraid gui? This could be your problem, you should have configured them in gui. Also I assume that you moved the default shares, how did you go about this?Could also be part of the problem.

I haven't had problems with shares as long as I configure the network share through the gui, as reezin said. It sticks between reboots. Good to hear that FlexRAID works with such a large number of drives! Also, I really like it for its ease of use.

I've ripped all of my blurays to my server as MKV files with either dolby trueHD or DTS-MA-HD whichever was on there. If you're on a gigabit network you'll have no problem streaming 20 blurays at once (theoretically) so long as your HDDs can keep up (they almost certainly can). Wireless could work but you'll need about 50Mb/s unless you want to re-encode your rips. bluray mkvinfo (Click to show)

^^^That would be great Boyboyd posted some links for ya. A friend of mine that runs a similar setup said he just stop sharing the folders. Then setup his Flexraid raid & storage pool, and simply added/moved the folders to flexraid.Might be a easier solution, but what I didn't find out though was if this effected his data.

I did get it to work. It wouldn't initially because windows 7 "remembers" shares. And mine was simply called "Z" in windows AND in flexraid's own sharing. Once i renamed flexraid's share to "share" it works. I'll just reboot the server and see if it keeps the settings.

Edit: Confirmed working here. Flexraid's sharing setup retains the settings after a reboot. Now i shouldn't ever need to RDP into my server. Thanks for the tip reezin
